Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Pretty sure Vic Bridges use to drive that Chinese 6 wheeler for Hill.
Note that load, blocks on the deck, handball on and off.
They were the days…Not !

Hattons !
I’m sure one of they’re drivers was Pete Humphries, who later went on to SCA Freight. He had an accident when he slipped stripping a tilt in Italy, hurt his back really badly. After that he worked for Smith of Maddison, eventually had to give up driving. Last I heard he was a car salesman in Winchester. Anyone remember him, or know if he’s still around ?

Pat (ainacs)
I see you made mention of George Eames, is he still with us ? . I remember George from the days when he was driving a tatty F10 for someone doing traction for Interoute. Quite a character George, if you met him on a trip he usually had the weeks menu down the front of his t shirt, he always liked doing Barcelona as he had a girlfriend there called Maria who sadly died ,I remember George was very cut up by it.

Found a few more oldies, this first one is before my time(only just)

This old Scammell Samson is as rare as rocking horse sh*t !!!

From the same stable .a Contractor

Lastly this Atki Borderer, dunno if this chap is still going,I got a pic of a Fiat of his too…somewhere.

Hope these bring back a few memories.
Marc.

Hi Marc, your photo’s are brilliant ! keep them coming. In answer to your last question Osborne’s are still going they have an IVECO Eurotech now, they sell tractors and agricultural equipment.
Regards MaggieD

Love the pic of the Seddon with stripped down tilt , justs a couple of torsion straps(no ratchets) and a bit of good old roping securing the trailer in the back, - Happy days !!

Seeing that picture of the Dennis on the weighbridge Mappo makes me remember how many drivers wore overalls in the old days.
Usually British Long Distance Green. :unamused:
I never wore them for driving though, just for loading and unloading.

 I worked for Shell and in the eighties, during the winter contractors were employed to help out.It was in the mid-eighties when The Southampton Tar boys were running out of the Wandsworth Depot, doing the black oil deliveries and I wondered if any of them are looking in.If so,do they remember the odd pint in “The Wheatsheaf” in Putney Bridge Road? They were good days and we had more than a few laughs.Write in if you were there as it would be good to hear from you. The depot closed just after 1987 and the drivers disbanded to other depots.Shame  ,it was a good job,no one ever left! Regards to you all,900X20.

Hi 900X20

Didn’t Clapcotts do any of that ? They had a yard along Millbank near to where the Saints new ground is and a workshop and yard at Nutsey Lane Totton (Now Man Dealership) horrible bluey/turquoise coloured cabs! Both Trevor and Seymour Clapcott were time served AEC apprentices at Southall and used to ride pushbikes up to Southall early Monday mornings and back again on a Friday!!!

Regards Pat

Found a few more Southampton lorries, not sure if they’re all still going though.
Norman Offer near Swindon

B.K.G Anyone know these?

Is this an M.W.Baker Sed-Atk?

R.J.Hood from Romsey.
Will look for some more over the next few days.
Cheers Marc

Thanks Bubbleman, really enjoy looking at your photos, particularly the 70s stuff, it reminds me of when i was a boy riding round with my dad in various old AECs Atkinsons and other British made lorries!! Top stuff, thanks.

Norman Offer near Swindon

Norman Offers used to have a yard just outside the dockgates but are long gone now! Norman himself was alovely old mad a real gent. His son Martin took the reins and not sure why but it failed, I believe he now runs a rest home

B.K.G Anyone know these?

BKG Brian Kenneth Gover now there is a true legend in the Southampton transport industry, I’m sure others will correct me but I believe that Roy worked with Charlie Jamesons years back and then went on to E F Phillips and Sons Transport Poole.

He had an incredible appetite for work, he could find work where others could not. He then set up BKG Transport they are based at Whiteparish and are still going strong Roy’s sons Tony and Terry now run it although Roy still keeps his hand in.

Is this an M.W.Baker Sed-Atk?

Looks very Much like one of Mo Bakers he of Transcon fame, Mo is no longer in transport as such although he does have a small slide back recovery truck and is now buying and selling light commercials.

R.J.Hood from Romsey.

Richard Hood runs a small fleet rigids and artic tippers and a flat I believe, and is based just off the A36 at Landford.
Will look for some more over the next few days.
Cheers Marc

Great pics again Marc Thanks
