Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

In Jan 1986,XUP was replaced by another 240T Contractor BCN 318V. This had been new to Pickfords in Nov 1967 as SJO 386F

Whenever possible, the Pirelli trlr was moved early on a Sunday morning but still caused traffic delays.

Intresting post “roolechat” about Shamara’s. Will pop an article on later about them. Did you take any pics of the ERF European he operated ?
Think this is the one
The first ERF NGC which Shamara used was PDF 444R the ex VIJORE INT unit

IIRC, Q691 NTR the NGC which pulled the Pirelli trlr was purchased from a dismantler in the autumn of 1984. it was a non runner & Kimber reengineered it, replacing the engine & converted it from a SWB 4x2 into a 6x4
It was registered on a Q plate as it was considered by the authorities to be a “new” vehicle due to the heavy modifications
Thanks for posting this stuff Roolechat! I haven’t seen that bottom picture before. From what you are saying, PDF 444R and the re-engineered (and re-registered) Q691 NTR are two separate vehicles. I had always thought that it was one and the same unit, especially as Q691 appeared to carry PDF’s distinctive bumper! If I am wrong, we may have a ‘new’ NGC for our count! Ro
Tony Kimber would certainly have known of PDF 444R in it’s original Shamara guise
The NGC he purchased from the dealer in Autumn 1984 had a serious mechanical issue & was due to be dismantled. Was it PDF ? Is it possible to establish dates of any of the Shamara photographs-are any of them post summer 1984 ? One would expect an NGC to be in service for more than 8 years but with PDF’s history, perhaps in summer 1984, it all came to an end at a local dismantler - with whom Kimber was aware
Kimber re engineered an NGC & it was registered in May 1985 as Q 691 NTR ,but I am unaware of it’s provenance.I’d always assumed that they were 2 different vehicles- but perhaps not !
As an aside, this dismantler did purchase for breaking, various pre loved vehicles from Europe - mostly Holland & Belgium.
Thanks again for your input. We do know that Shamara actually ran PDF 444R on container work for a while - see pics below (which, as you rightly point out had a hard paper-round on the Middle-East run) but in '84 it would still only have been 7 years old and it’s older sisters were still working out in the desert. Many NGCs lived long. I’ve always assumed (and it is an assumption!) that it converted after this brief life on domestic containers. Hope pics help! 2nd pic by Peter Davies. Ro

As well as pulling the Pirelli trlr, Kimber’s ex Pickfords Contractor did other work. In summer 1986 it was at Calshot Spit (entrance to Southampton Water) to move the cradled Endeavour one of the last J class yachts built for racing (1934) Endeavour*[] was 130ft long & the steel hulled yacht weighed over 150 T- of which 70 T was lead in the keel.*

Magnificent, I can’t find another word that fits better. And so futuristic, especially when you compare a modern lorry to one made in 1934.

No wonder she needed 70 tons of lead in the keel, when you see the height of that mast and the sail area.

The corporation owned airport dates from before the war. Airspeed established a factory to build aircraft there in the early 30’s.Airspeed’s chief designer was Nevil Shute Norway who later became a a successful novelist. Post war,the airport was used mainly for Channel Island services but in the late 1960’s (67 ?) a period of prolonged heavy rain made the grass runway heavy going & Channel Airways damaged 2 aircraft landing on the soft surface.

The corporation closed the airport & it was redeveloped as an industrial estate

Scammell XMT45 with one of two that were both moved on the same day that they crashed. I think the airport was closed after that but im not sure?

Gardner 8LXB Foden with the 12 speed box,not every driver’s favourite gearbox

The Foden 12 speed box? I loved it.

And with the big Gardner in it too. My first motor at Econofreight. It stuck out the front, not the back as with Atkis etc.

And with a 205 ■■■■■■■■ my first motor at K&M.

You’re right, the 8LX protruded at the front with the Foden, but at the rear of the cab when installed in the Seddon, ERF, Atkinson & of course the Guy Big J.

Hi Dean,

I remember Mitchell Self Drive a good family firm, Harry Mitchell and his family lived next door to us in Southsea. He was a great sailor and always talked of sailing round Cape Horn, after he retired he set off in his 40ft “Hornblower” with 19 other yachts from South Carolina on a round the world race in September 1994, on March 2nd 1995 his emergency beacon went off and sadly after much searching he was never found and was presumed lost at sea a sad end to a larger than life character.

The industrial estate where the airport used to be is next to the Eastern Road, on the right as you come into Portsmouth, and covers a large area.

Regards
Richard

Hi Dean, yes, the old airfield was north East Portsmouth, dealt with them with a few F 86 tractors. Harvey
