Transport Services from Southampton on a Bandag advert from 1981.
Prior to it being Transport Services, when it was Jim Squibb, running out of a bungalow at Cadnam, I drove an F88 on contract to Avon tyres, this would be the around 1970, Avon supplied new tyres for both the tractor and designated trailer for testing purposes. Every third trip while loading at Avon’s, a technician would check all the tyres against mileage looking for any defects. Every few months they were changed for a new set. Avon got tyres tested under normal operating conditions, and Jim got free tyres for as long as the contract lasted…a good deal that suited both parties.

Other Scammell Contractors operating in Southampton were the 2 Shamara/Kimber ones used at different periods to haul the oversize Pirelli trailer between Pirelli’s 2 factories,Leigh Rd Eastleigh & West Quay Rd Southampton
The first 240T Contractor was XUP 999F which was new to Siddle C Cook in Feb 1968.
Cook’s became part of the Road Services Forth group which in turn was acquired by the National Freight Corporation. XUP was transferred to Pickfords
Shamara Heavy Haulage acquired XUP from N. Ireland in 1983 & in 1984,it started pulling the oversize Pirelli trailer between Eastleigh & Southampton
In Jan 1986,XUP was replaced by another 240T Contractor BCN 318V. This had been new to Pickfords in Nov 1967 as SJO 386F
Whenever possible, the Pirelli trlr was moved early on a Sunday morning but still caused traffic delays.
Tony Kimber used to service my trucks in the early 80’s and I remember him buying that ■■■■■■ van brand new, he was related in some way to Barry Squibb of Transport Services and did ship out to the ME much earlier for Jim Squibb. He told me he ran an old Merc and came across a couple of blokes in an F89 and the gearbox had gone, they were on a timed delivery with penalty so money changed hands and they swopped trucks, Tony knew another of Jim’s trucks was behind him and they towed in tandem 1000 miles and while clearing they had the box out and repaired it and he drove her home, some time later someone tried to get the F89 back as apparently it was on finance. happy days Buzzer

Though the Scammell Contractors did the majority of the pulling, the majority of the pushing of the Pirelli trlr was carried out by the Scammell Samson

Intresting post “roolechat” about Shamara’s. Will pop an article on later about them. Did you take any pics of the ERF European he operated ?

The first ERF NGC which Shamara used was PDF 444R the ex VIJORE INT unit
IIRC, Q691 NTR the NGC which pulled the Pirelli trlr was purchased from a dismantler in the autumn of 1984. it was a non runner & Kimber reengineered it, replacing the engine & converted it from a SWB 4x2 into a 6x4
It was registered on a Q plate as it was considered by the authorities to be a “new” vehicle due to the heavy modifications

Thanks for posting this stuff Roolechat! I haven’t seen that bottom picture before. From what you are saying, PDF 444R and the re-engineered (and re-registered) Q691 NTR are two separate vehicles. I had always thought that it was one and the same unit, especially as Q691 appeared to carry PDF’s distinctive bumper! If I am wrong, we may have a ‘new’ NGC for our count! Ro
Excellent stuff “roolechat” about Shamara’s ERF. That Tony Kimber was switched on buying those motors very cheap then over hauling them. Must have saved himself a fortune on buying a new heavy haulage unit.
Heres a bit about him.

Tony Kimber would certainly have known of PDF 444R in it’s original Shamara guise
The NGC he purchased from the dealer in Autumn 1984 had a serious mechanical issue & was due to be dismantled. Was it PDF ? Is it possible to establish dates of any of the Shamara photographs-are any of them post summer 1984 ? One would expect an NGC to be in service for more than 8 years but with PDF’s history, perhaps in summer 1984, it all came to an end at a local dismantler - with whom Kimber was aware
Kimber re engineered an NGC & it was registered in May 1985 as Q 691 NTR ,but I am unaware of it’s provenance.I’d always assumed that they were 2 different vehicles- but perhaps not !
As an aside, this dismantler did purchase for breaking, various pre loved vehicles from Europe - mostly Holland & Belgium.
