Not with lorries anymore…Ron Morgan one of the sons of Charlie who started the business, is an old school friend, on the rare occasion I go back to the UK I drop in to see him, he runs the garage and fuel station with his wife Sue…having said that it was over three years ago that I last spoke to him, and he was thinking of packing it in.
The original business of scrap, second had lorries, export, and ex WW2 surplus i believe is nothing like it was in its heyday…if that side is still going that is, they emloyed a lot of people, and were at one time agents for M.A.N. and ROMAN lorries…
.

Hi Chris, hope you’re well…
Had an ex Bakers MAN at Keelhaul… twin bunks, plenty of space, column change, must admit, one of the best motors I drove, they gave me a new DAF 2500, did one trip, couldn’t get on with it, got the old MAN back instead…

Dave,
Please do not mention to the Whipper snapper that some of these vehicles had column gear changes, remember how long it took us the explain that lorries have not always had that D-N-R switch on the dashboard, Anon 2

Hello Dave, I recall seeing ROMAN rigid lorries fairly regularly during the 1970s and 1980s.
A firm from East Lancashire, Accrington or Burnley area had several of them.
I Imagine “moomooland” and “240 Gardner” can put a name to the company. Regards, Ray Smyth.
Buzzer:
Jimski saw this on FB and thought of you mate, not a bad model eh but I remember them in real life as well, cheers Buzzer.
PS. Where is RTD ? bit of argy bargy on here now this thread is alive again, JD.
That is a 1:50 scale John I believe?
Gerbil : nice to see the model again Kev, still looks in great shape !! And also like you mentioned about the hub reduction axle if you look on the model I put reduction hubs on it too … just so it was right ! enjoy
I didn’t realise it was so close to Richards Reg until you mentioned it !!! Lol .

Ray…I only ever remember seeing 4 wheel rigid ROMANS, although I believe they did do tractor units.

Hi Dave hope your well !!! Our good friend Tony Mappo drove a Roman tractor unit, I forget what the company was called but it was the people who run the heavy goods driving school “BYPASS” in Fair Oak the two brothers that run that it was their Dad that Tony had the Roman !
R Jimmer.
horaces first:
Hi Jimsky, your latest model is unbelievable, rusty paintwork, snow chains, grubby chassis at the back, missing marker lens the list goes on and on, congratulations or as the kirmits say chapeau! regards Andy
Thank you "Horace’s first " the first two pics and last two pics were taken before the model had been put on its base, and your right there were no side markers on it and if you look behind the cab the air lines were not connected either all gets done on the final base, but the markers are on it in Richards pic, and air lines on !
Thanks for all the nice comments, dunno what to do next ■■? Maybe a Pat Duffy’s 142 with the tag axle?
or my first ever truck for Meachers Scammell Handyman, and 20’ container ■■?
Hi Jimski,
The spare wheel and snow chains did it for me, fantastic, well done once again.
Question: Do you live in a mansion or do you have a plane hanger in the back garden to keep this wondefull collection, ■■? Harvey
Hi HRS No … no hanger or mansion ! Just my humble shed, I’ve only got 3 models of lorrys I used to drive
All the rest have been sold to the lads that drove them or owned them. 1:24 scale that I build are quite a length Mrs won’t allow them in the house !!

Hi Jim, yes we’re both well thanks, and you and Jackie too I trust…
Thanks for that Jim, I don’t remember Mappo with a Roman, only an M.A.N when he drove for Fred Croucher at Chandler’s Ford…must be getting on for nearly 40 years now…
MaggieD:
Jim,
I think it was a Roman Chariot that Tony was driving when he first started !
Regards
Richard
