Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

badboybumpkin:
Hi Richard Thanks for that I was just interested as I was just a kid at the time and did a couple of trips abroad with Gordon Smith from Mammoths, just happened to come across these old photos earlier.Would you know if Mammoth had a LHD Transcon or Leyland around that time or is that something I’ve imagined ?

Anyone have any idea on this one…I’m just interested to find out if it is the ageing mind playing tricks ?

Hi Richard,

I seem to remember a Marathon which I think Cliff Hack drove,I’ve seen a pic on facebook some time ago.

Have you seen Gordon lately ?

Richard

Didn’t you have a Marathon when you were on for Hayes of Fareham Tony? Regards Charlie.

I certainly did Charlie…this one…

The couple of Marathons that Ron Blackman had were pretty tidy. They were never far behind. Mind you there weren’t many who could keep up with Big Chas. Not that I’m conceived.(Spelling) conceited. Regards Charlie.

Hi Charlie,

Hope you and Rose are ok try and get up to see you before Christmas.

I remember loading round timber back in the early 70’s on Goodwood Estate, with Ron driving a D8 loading us up,he knew how to handle that machine ! Then we ran to South Wales together, the driver was a 6’6" chap can’t remember his name, I had a job to keep up with him in my old A.E.C. that Marathon pulled like a train,he went on to the weighbridge in Wales first, and the weighbridge office window flew open and the Welsh voice from within said something like " I say old chap would you remove your lorry very quickly as my weighbidge only goes up to 45 tons and you are heavier than that" it was a bit more graphic than that. Good days another of Buzzers Mary Hopkins moments.

Regards
Richard

Hi Ian,

Hope you and the family are well, let us a know when you are in the area.

Here are a couple of pics of you and your brother to remind you where the bar is at Christmas time :unamused: :unamused:
The first one is a young lad checking to see if he can get away with just buying one drink !!
The second one shows your dear brother Chris, with GazIOW,Dave Howard standing, and good old Winky fast asleep, having had to do a one hitter from Oporto to get back for the Christmas do.

I have others but am saving them in case they are needed for a blackmail case I am handling at the moment

See you soon

Richard
