Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

I see Bursledon brickworks has been mentioned…i worked there for 2 days in 1965…
It was one of many jobs in the first two years after leaving school…
As you will all remember, back then you could finish a job one day, and start elsewhere the following day…
At the age of 17 i got involved in transport, and the rest as they say is history…

Ha ha Charlie…you know me too well mate… :open_mouth:

hi buzzer, i remember that old Chinese six going into the lock in le havre, and like you say the driver was a very lucky guy,but at least he didn’t have to wash his underpants,i also worked for Frank Allan and had a mandator, very good trucks in those days, :unamused: but like you say no sleepers, so used to carry a board of wood that used to sit just right on the window ledges and that was your bed for the night,i didn’t stay with Frank for long as i could not get on with the guy they called Tinkler, he was a born liar who was in the traffic office in those days, maybe ill meet up with him one day, anyway what i wanted to say about the Chinese six that they renamed her ,THE SPIRIT OF DOT,Mappo might be able to confirm this■■? :sunglasses: ps:not only did Frank Allan try to cash in on candles but also sugar out of MARLE when the sugar shortage was on over here.

Hi all, re the candle incident, the driver was a Scotsman, Jimmy Carlin…
I didn,t know him at the time of the accident, but later worked and became mates with him at
Simons Fruit and Veg in Titchfield, and also at Smith of Maddiston in Totton.

Oh and Bev i,m not old enough to remember that mate… :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Stroker 156 DOT:
Hi Buzzer, Yes I was a racer but stroker 156 DOT is in memory of the Foden 2stroke (SouthamptonPrince) I drove for many thousands of miles in the early 60,s We rebuilt her into a twin steer tractor unit with Gardner 150 in 1969 after being written off on the M1. She was renamed THE GHOST OF DOT but again written off in the port of Cherbourg with 20tons of candles on board. Jim Sqibb sent me telex next morning renaming her THE Yellow Submarine.
It would be nice to meet up sometime. Regards stroker.

The incident of the 20 ton of candles. It went in the harbour, because the swing bridge was swung…
It was in Le Harve, early '70’s, driven by Jimmy Carlin…a few of us on here remember it well, Nobby Stratton for one, … Jimmy, one of the luckiest men alive, although he never noticed at the time. :unamused:

Hi Dave and you are right to beg the question, “Don’t you blokes read anything”? I did post the facts on Jimmy’s accident a while ago. Also the fact that I was drinking with him in the Southampton Bar just minutes before the incident. When we said goodnight and he left me (with his legs on back to front) to drive round to Normandy Ferries,I never dreamed what was in store for him!!!
Also I gave in another post the chapter and verse on the history of P.B.C. but that also seems to have escaped many people. Perhaps they do read but don’t register and that I can confirm comes with age. Regards, Nobby.

Not this time Richard, she’s been promoted, to brain surgeon…alas, the majority of people I know don’t have a brain…so she can’t experiment on any of them…however, the above two illeterates need more than a nurse, more of a care assistant, perhaps 25 stone of ex Russian military tank driver…in a skirt, to keep them in check…

25 stone eh Dave.Did you see that Mappo. Sounds like our kind of woman. Has she got a whip? Or is it just a wallnut? Regards Charlie

Well Charlie, Mappo would have a cardiac arrest at the mere thought of a tank driver in suspenders and a nurses uniform, and you Charles, with your dickie eyes wouldn’t see her/him/it a foot away, so no point in getting excited…and like Mappo, your ticker wouldn’t take it… :unamused:

Hi Nobby, hope you’re well…Well, Jimmy Carlin, if you thought Mappo was lucky to survive falling off a bridge, the J.C had a pair of angels on his shoulders that night…you couldn’t make that story up …

Off to Wick eh Richard, pop in the old police station while you are there mate and say hello from me. Spent a night there in 2011 very hospitable it was to sleeping on a 3 inch thick plastic coated mattress on a concrete floor one blanket and no pillow and flurescent lighting on all night woken at 6am and not with a cup of tea but to have me fingerprints done.
We don’t need to go into detail why but you cant call some one a black barsteward in Scotland and get away with it, no sense of humour them Scots, cheers Buzzer.

PS. Mappo for your info Qwozzy is in Hospital think with a busted ulcer and its doing his head in as its no smoking in them places, will update if we get any more news.
