Stroker 156 DOT:
Hi Baldrick, This is my 1st post, however the person you mentioned is Brian Mathieson, who owned the Concorde Jazz Club in Stoneham Lane, Eastleigh.Great times had by all in those days. regards, Stroker.

Stroker you a motorcycle man perchance, Buzzer.

Welcome , Stroker.
But no , not him.

This club was in the City…

Yes, great times at the old Concorde!

Cheers. Baldrick.

Hi Buzzer, Yes I was a racer but stroker 156 DOT is in memory of the Foden 2stroke (SouthamptonPrince) I drove for many thousands of miles in the early 60,s We rebuilt her into a twin steer tractor unit with Gardner 150 in 1969 after being written off on the M1. She was renamed THE GHOST OF DOT but again written off in the port of Cherbourg with 20tons of candles on board. Jim Sqibb sent me telex next morning renaming her THE Yellow Submarine.
It would be nice to meet up sometime. Regards stroker.

Hi Richard and Angie. Thank you both very much for your kind wishes. I think Mappo is going backwards. The last time he was 65. Then it was 58. I rest my case. Regards Charlie.

The incident of the 20 ton of candles. It went in the harbour, because the swing bridge was swung…
It was in Le Harve, early '70’s, driven by Jimmy Carlin…a few of us on here remember it well, Nobby Stratton for one, … Jimmy, one of the luckiest men alive, although he never noticed at the time. :unamused:

I remember that unit…
I drove it once or twice when it was owned by Frank Allen of PBC in Sholing…
Also remember the candle incident. Can’t remember the drivers name …although Harry rings a bell.
I thought it went in the drink in Le Havre , not Cherbourg.?
It was at the time of the 3 day week and power cuts. '74 was it? Ted Heath was PM.

Richard, you old dog! All good here in the Emerald Isle thanks. A rare day of sun so will be getting the boat out on the lake later. ( sadly, not a Sunseeker just a dinghy.)

Yes! Brian Adamson at the Silouhette Club. Well done.
You win a subscription to Mappos new magazine, Sandal Vogue. Enjoy!

Out of the blue I had an email from Steve Johnson. Ex Partrans director and latterly the wine importer that I can’t remember the name of…am sure you will.
Did you know him ? Am sure there’s a few on here will have pulled their tilts/ tanks.

Well Stroker I also drove for Frank Allen who ran PBC which actually was the initials of his former company “Public Benefit Coal Co” that was a laugh as he used to put big sea washed boulders in the bottom of the bags to short change the customers and if any one challenged him he said they were to hold the MT sacks down on the back of the truck, he got nabbed in the end. He is still alive and kicking and lives close to me today, used to be next door.
That was my first International job driving for PBC out of yard in Sholing next to Veals warehouse, I drove a Mandator GOW 78L back in 1973 and remember that old Foden well, I believe it was chopped from an eight legger tipper from the coal fleet. Every bit of gear was a bit naff especially the trailers, we did a lot of ISR rubber out also a lot of sheepskins which was a crap job and knackered the trailers with salt., A lot were welded up so if you got a strip out job you needed essential equipment of big lump hammer and crow bar.
The load of Candle’s in the dock incident was Frankie’s idea of making a big buck fast, as was mentioned there was a power strike in Britain and he thought he would make a killing, they reckon that those candle surfaced for years after.
Have memories of the men who worked there when I did, Pat Scorey, Jim Baily from Warminster, Derek etc etc had some laughs down the road even though most of us had no sleeper cabs but that’s how it was back then.
Frank Allen also had a hand in starting up Truckline Ferries in Poole and we shipped that way all the time, flying out if too many drivers as it only took 12 in the old push pull planes of Aurigny services from Alderny bet you remember that.
Stroker our paths may have crossed there at PBC but it gave me a taste for International work and we are still at it today although not me as I have retired. Be nice to meet up for a cup of tea some time, I still live in Bursledon so PM me if you wish, Buzzer.,

It was Seabrooks…run by Eric Rivers I think.
Another fella in the office was the unfortunately named Michael Hunt.

He was a regular in the Elm Tree in Swanwick for a while in the nineties. Due to a driving ban he would have a cab home every night at 10.
We would all wait for the taxi man to come in and shout " Taxi for Mike Hunt "…
I kid you not…

Hi Stuart

The Silhouette club was also a Casino and gaming establishment
One evening Mappo went in there it was very flash Mappo was wearing his gold lame shorts for the occasion, he was playing dominoes with some other lads, the place was so upmarket the spots on the dominoes spots were actually diamonds ! At the end of the evening Mappo got up to leave before he could get out of the door two security guys stopped him and said “one of the dominoes is missing” "How did you know it was me ?asked Mappo
“Because it’s the double blank” they said !!
Regards
Richard

HA HA HA ! very good Richard is it not amazing we both employed him in the past, the mind bobbles. Buzzer.

Yes…
Very good Richard!

I had a pm from a certain " Jimski " from the Totton Parish, asking about Partrans and where they were based in Southampton.
They didn’t have a yard, just an office in the old Nat West Chambers just down from the Marsh pub. They were an offshoot of Partricks of Northampton. Directors were Roy Maclean and Steve Johnson…
They only had two units as I recall . Both F12s. One driven by " Snoopy " aka Steve Jones of Totton…the other I can’t remember. I drove Snoopys on holiday relief a few times , mostly on the old Portugal run , and later pulled their trailers for other companies. Mick Hayes was one who subbed for them … I wonder if there are others on here that did as well?..

I think they went down the tube in the end, although Partricks continued.

Well thanks to everyone for the usual banter and sarcastic comments…
who are you lot gonna pick on when i,m not here i wonder…

This page i have to say has been like a history lesson and full of interesting facts…
Obviously i,m not old enough to remember it all… :unamused: :unamused:
