Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi Richard. I have finally decided to give up my job of comedy writer and leave the field clear for you. Its time a younger better looking guy took over. However as we can’t find one,you will have to do.I wish you lots of luck. Please thank Angie for the Eye Pad. Will be received with gratitude. Rose says just give her time to put her teeth in! Would be nice to see you all. Just wait until my op to extract my wallet has been a success. Regards Charlie

Hi Dallan,

Great photo’s is that Dave Enstone with you in the Marsala pic ? I sent him down there some years later to load, and the “little girl” who was there when he first went down all those years ago,now works in the office and recognized him !!
With reference to Buzzers comments about weight upon return to UK,I for my sins inherited 7 of these FL7’s together with the road tankers, and step frame iso trailers from Robert Armstrong, then P&O Tankmasters in 1990 when I took over the fleet.

Regards
Richard

Brings back memories Riochard, in the background you can see my ERF. I was working for Reliance Tankers at the time and we used to park 2 of them in that yard running Bitumen out of Fawley refinery for Briggs Oils from Elsmere Port.

this picture was taken on her maiden voyage and before they had the cab top nameboards put on.

regards

Colin

Many thanks for the pic Dallan. Keep em coming.Good work doing Armstrong’s.well organised. Paperwork all in order etc. Plus plenty wine. The job I liked best was two trips to Goldener Oktober in Bingen and back to Grants of St James in Guildford. Nice weeks work. Regards Charlie

I also enjoyed Bingen.I used to park by the River junction go to the angling shop and buy a guest fishing permit. Then off to the river to catch a few carp followed by a meal at the nearby café.

gazzer:

Buzzer:
Used to love pulling those road tanks when doing traction on Armstrong’s, no load surge under breaking as well baffled by the separate pots. Remember loading at the foot of the South of France between Bordeaux and Toulouse and down towards the Pyrinees mountain line, a lovely crisp morning in March. Any ways started filling tank and I needed the loo’s for a wash etc. and was shown through the pack house where they were boxing up Almenac (spelling) on my return the chap said to me "whats the weather like in Holland " at which point I told him I was English, then came some expletive and I was not suppose to be loading there but 20 kms away so a quick pump out wash out red faces and of to where I was meant to be loading, then up to Saumur for clearance and still caught the night boat.
Did not like the ISO tanks and most blokes filled them right up so no slop, of course this was over weight for the UK but we were not doing onward delivery cheers Buzzer.

I worked for Armstrongs from 1973 until emigrating in 1979.Pic of Marsala attached

I’m gobsmacked you should remember me Richard thank you for that
They were good days I firmly believe anyone involved in transport during the 70’s 80’s and early 90’s, whether at home or abroad, as driver or operator enjoyed the best years the industry had.
the later 90’s weren’t to bad but it went t*ts up after the Millenium. “God bless the EU”

Yes I am well thank you … unlike many of the other contributors   it’s like tuning into Holby City here sometimes! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

This has been posted on TNUK but was a Soton motor from new bought by Mr Creswell, Ted if my memory is right and goes back to the era that Colin mentioned and he is right back in the day every body helped each other on the road what ever problem you had and as he said not today , all that camaraderie is gone but there aint no where as many Brits going to Europe nowadays, Buzzer.

I bitterly resent your acidic remarks about Holby City Colin. Its my favourite program. I have suffered from all of the complaints on it. Mind you compared with Mappo I am just a novice. Stay lucky young man Regards Charlie
