Long commutes to work

Hi All, just a quick query. I am trying to get a job with a large company but I reside in the southwest quite a way from the company HQ / base. I have since asked as I live so far away would they, a. still employ me and b. are there any ways I can get assistance for commuting or possibly end tramping week down this way. I know what some of you are saying (move house) but I cant due to family etc. My query is has anyone heard of any companies offering travel assistance or ending the weeks tramping near the drivers home to assist etc. Not much work down here in SW hence why searching a bit further afield. Cheers all and safe journeys.

Used to be very common for drivers to live significant miles from base and take the trucks home but the nimby problem has meant an end in a lot of cases. Some do rent parking spaces and get an additional operator’s licence to run a north or south operation on the cheap sometimes.

There are loads of potential employers in the South West though so not sure why you’d want the aggro of a long commute.

As I said elsewhere. I live in Devon and work out of Birmingham. There is Jack [zb] worth doing down here. Tramp and come home fortnightly like I do. (Well not for much longer.)

If you put where you live someone might recommend some where near you hope it helps

Yes, it happens. Read Boardall have (or did have) trucks and drivers dotted about the country, parked up on industrial estates or at other people premises. Hartlepool, Gloucester, Berwick and Glasgow that I know of. Wyvern Cargo had two drivers from the North-East that parked their trucks in Tyne Dock every weekend. I had friend that worked for a Plymouth company (Gardners, maybe?) that delivered to Nissan every Friday, then went home to Durham for the weekend. I’ve never known them pay travel expenses unless the company has relocated and wants to keep the drivers it already has

Hi Many thanks for your replies, reference where I live is Plymouth. I am ideally looking for tramping Mon-Fri with decent money I am looking further afield as money slightly better too.

What about the company based in Truro with the black and white scanned that pull grey curtain siders? Forgot the name  I’d have thought due to the geographical position of the south west and where you are based Plymouth that most tramping jobs down there you would be weekended out a few weeks anyway so if you have say an hour drive to work does it really matter if you won’t be back at the yard for 2 week?

Respect :sunglasses:

I moan like a ■■■■■ for having to travel 54 miles a day, for 40 odd hours a week

Have u tried Conway Bailey in Redruth ? Or there sister company R and R ? Dennis Oates based near Penzance I was talkin to a lad last week whilst down there on holiday who had relocated down there who had contacted them and said they were recruiting or looking for drivers also Gregory’s mite worth a shout as they seem to do anything and anything down there from general work to waste and I saw a lot of sewerage/waste tankers knocking about Hope this is a help .

Presently covering 50mls a day to and from (last work was previously 70)

Far from ideal, but plenty of hourly paid (agency) work, and infinitely preferable to sitting at home watching Jezza.

Nothing`s forever though, is it?

Hi Yes tried Westfield everytime I do I get the same old response “not rec4uiting at moment sorry” mind you at least I get a response some companies don’t even have the decency to respond anymore which I have to admit I feel is a shame a little acknowledgement goes a long way. I have tried a few round my way but money low so further away I go and a weekend every now and then working is good but not all the time

50 mile round trip a day for me.

Chris

Not ever heard of travel assistance with haulage companies, remember with some of my mates use to take the tractor unit home with them years go in the 90s as a perk of the job…

Think one of the issues is something to do with when theres snow about and you can’t get in…but then I see more danger in trying to drive an artic when the snow is that bad

But like you… think I’m gonna have to be travelling some distances to work so Im considering using a smart car to get 2 and from work, as long as theres somewhere in the yard to park it… I is happy …and there cheap as chips to run, insure .etc etc … room enough for you and ya stuff :grimacing:

Long commutes are best done on a smallish motorcycle (less than 500cc) - that way you can get high MPG and low insurance, plus they are very easy to find somewhere to park at the other end. Assuming of course, you have the correct licence! Or possibly a small diesel car, although this is likely to cost more to run over time.

Not really sure why you’d want to commute from Devon a long way north. Unless they’re offering you a grand a week of course. A lot of hassle for a bit more money and no other life whatsoever, if you’re doing two weeks on and a weekend off for example… No point in having more money if you’ve no life left to enjoy it with.

And if you go back every weekend, you’ll be so shagged out, you’ll spend most of it in bed…

Can’t see the quality of life there, unless you’re married to truck driving of course.

I commute 48 miles each way to work. On the plus side I work for an agency via an umbrella company so can offset my fuel.

I also run my car on vegetable oil so the cost isn’t too much of a factor.

Having said that the hour I travel either side of work is a bit of a pain.

Not tramping but 3663 are after drivers at the moment don’t know what they pay but its only up the road also tuffnells wanted drivers I think it was for a night trunk but that was a couple of weeks ago so may have been filled finally have you tried fowler Welch based at heathfield. Just remembered I think its ocean fish based at Victoria were advertising for a tramper UK and European work could be good about 45 mins drive from Plymouth.

My commute is 113miles each way to work on the plus side I only have to do it 17 days a month = 3842 miles a month ,
