Long commutes to work

damian39:
I commute 48 miles each way to work. On the plus side I work for an agency via an umbrella company so can offset my fuel.

I also run my car on vegetable oil so the cost isn’t too much of a factor.

Having said that the hour I travel either side of work is a bit of a pain.

You only get top whack for the first 10,000 miles - which you’ll be using up by about this time of the tax year already… Assuming you’re working 5 shifts a week, and are not tramping of course…! :stuck_out_tongue:
Seriously though… Be careful driving home on friday nights - because it’s the one time our guard as a commuter is at it’s lowest ebb…

Not tramping but 3663 are after drivers at the moment don’t know what they pay but its only up the road also tuffnells wanted drivers I think it was for a night trunk but that was a couple of weeks ago so may have been filled finally have you tried fowler Welch based at heathfield. Just remembered I think its ocean fish based at Victoria were advertising for a tramper UK and European work could be good about 45 mins drive from Plymouth.

Hi many thanks for all tips I will have a look at all etc. I did look at ocean fish but they are only offering £8 an hour so a bit low for euro plus uk etc but will see as they say. Place I was looking at was 500+ a week but trying to work out commuting costs etc.

I’m in a similar position. Rent where I am has got too expensive so we are moving up to the midlands. Going to be doing the weekly commute from Ashby to Thurrock for a month or so! Already applying for jobs , can’t see the distance commute thing working for long. Long distance relationships don’t usually work![GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES][GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES][GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

Also Verne, you could try Benny Thompson at Moretonhampstead, had a mate work for him and he said he was a good employer, he only left to go on the petrol tanks.

Nowdays, that’ll be mostly Bidvest-style deliveries to Dartmoor Prison then?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

Mad Friday is called…ummm Mad Friday down our way…

If you note regular lorries down your way from companies based a long way off, especially if they’re night outing Sunday or Friday nights, it might be worth tapping them up for outbasing a bloke with some nous down the SW, they can only say no.

Give yourself some nous points by already having some decent safe off road parking pencilled in should they offer that one as a reason not to.

Not alot happening down this part of the world , Plymouth is a mid point between the industrial areas of Redruth and the industrial Estates of Exeter. Have you tried Kays at Lee Mill , or if you were prepaired to travel less than an hour away to Exeter there appears to be quite a bit of work there too.

Whilst it is lovely being able to live in a very pictureque part of the world like we do here in the Plymouth area ,we are restricted in our employment outlook particulary when it comes to tramping or regular trunking work , most vehicles pass through on there way elsewhere without having a base in the area.

Its difficult sometimes to achieve the optimum work / home balance as you are finding out.

Good Luck
