London lorry parks in the 80 s

mushroomman:
WOW, I had forgotton half of those, Silvertown, Vauxhall Bridge, The Ramp having a cup of tea in the old railway carriage on Shepherds Bush lorry park, although I never ate in there. I prefered to walk through to the Shepherds Bush pub taking the short cut past those indoor tennis courts or were they squash courts ?. The toilets in that porta cabin that were always flooded or the bogs that were always blocked up any time after five o’clock.
I used to like Valance Road in the early seventies, after a wash in the Salvation Army doss house for 10p it was a pint in the Blind Begger on Whitechaple Road and then does anybody remember going over to the Montague Arms at New Cross on the tube to see the comedians Jimmy Jones ect. Or how many can remember going to see the exotic Swedish stripper in the Red Lion at Aldgate ?. Swedish :unamused: ? the nearest she had ever been to Sweden was lying on the bunk of a Volvo F88.

ha ha yer right there, remember goin up bethnal green rd watchin the girls in the pubs,2 come to mind, the van tromp[spelling] and thje greengate, happy days.

Thanks for jogging my ole memory I couldn’t remember those pub names for the life of me   If I recall rightly the Greengate also used have a very ‘blue’ comedian/compere who worked the crowd and he went on to be on the telly, adverts, and I’m sure he was in one or two series that were on in the 70’s/80’s Can’t remember his name? does this ring any bells for anyone?

Mushroomman… I to used to stop at Aldgate and use the Red Lion, that mirror behind the strippers could have done with a clean, the Seven Stars also, I used to just call in for a pint some nights running down to Dover, not forgetting the Elephant and Castle lorry park as well, some good pubs on the Old Kent rd.

Icertainly remember the one at Silvertown,we used to clear boxes just down the road then stop there for the night. One morning I went roaring off and was flagged down along the Embankment by some bloke in a car.He said my back doors were open and boxes had been falling out along the road.Turned out some scumbag had cut the bolt-seal off the back doors of my 20’ box and helped himself to some Van Heusen shirts I was taking to Exeter.Only I lost more than that falling out the back as I drove.
Always went round the back after that to check they were shut!

There was another one we used to stop at regularly off the Nth Circular,Enfield or Edmonton■■?

I haven’t heard anyone mention Leman St. digs, or did it go by another name? I stopped in there when tipping early doors at Spitalfields. They would put you on the shake in time to make your delivery - or wait to make it more like. :smiling_imp:

In that area, what was the name of the pub / digs, almost opposite the Silvertown motel ? it was on the left going toward the East India Dock Rd and you could see in the bedrooms when you went over the flyover.
I lost my wallet one time, and only had enough small change for a meal, in fact I was a few pence short. When I told the landlady what happened, she let me stay the night without payment, and gave me 10 shillings to see me through the next day. I was back up there the following week and paid her the 10 shillings back, but she would’nt take anything for the bed. As it happend the walled had dropped down behind the seat and wedged in the battery box. Always stayed there after that, when ever I was in london, just can’t remember the name !

  Not like that !! Lovely couple who ran it, typical east-enders, would help you out if you were in trouble. Just can’t remember the name of the place. :unamused:

Although not technically “London”, whenever i was anywhere to the west of London for a night out I always made for the Old Deer Park car park on the A316 dual carriageway at Richmond, opposite the public baths. It was a car park during the day, but they let wagons on from about 4 o’clock onwards. It had a Legion Club next to it (cheap beer!) and after a bath in the private baths in the baths opposite it was down the road to a cafe run by Italians for a good nosh, then on to sample the many cracking pubs in the area (if you were feeling flush.) Loads of the furniture boys from Christie Tyler group used to park there so there was always a chance of some cheap 3 piece suites etc. I did park up in Kingston a couple of times, but preferred Richmond. I tried Shepherd’s Bush a couple of times, but always seemed to end up getting involved in a punch-up in the pubs round there. Plus I always seemed to get a fridge come and park next to me after i had left the wagon to go out for the evening. I parked at the Silverton motel once and got blocked in by late leavers the next morning, so when overnighting on the east side of London I used to stay in our company’s depot on Ripple Road, Barking and go to the pub near there (I think it was the Malt Shovel, but I’m not sure). Some time ago I took the wife to london for a few days and i said I would take her to some of the pubs I used to drink in the area. What a mistake! How things have changed in the last 30 years! I must be getting old or something.

What about “Gardners Corner” and there was another small one close by, I used it 72/73 but can’t remember the name, come on it was two words, someone must know!
