Thanks again for all the info on here,pm’s and emails, just to let you know that the deal is off as the shovel is not up to scratch
The dealer in Portugal could have it sent to Santander for 2,000 euro, the ferry to Portsmouth was working out at 1,800 euro, the other alternative was to ship it from Lisbon to the Uk (not sure which port) for 3,000 euro so probably would’ve shipped it from Lisbon to the Uk and then onto Liverpool.
It’s a pity the deal fell through but it was interesting to find out all the options!
Or it could have gone on a truck from Lisbon to Porto port then back that way, the port in Porto is Leca de Palmeria, and the rates may have been cheaper.
In the 90`s there was a service that only took trailers on their own from Porto/Southampton/Porto, the local hauliers were not too happy in Portugal as they were losing out on their traction services and revenue dropped.
What i had in mind was euro auctions have a sale down in valencia , a lot of that gear gets taken to valencia port then put on a boat, euro are an irish co,some of it must get back to ireland, so i would have shipped it by road to valencia and put it on the boat from
There, or pay me loads and loads of money to take it all the way by road but , not a chance of me doing it for 4k!

Indeed, & people expect hauliers to work for less & less when the costs to us go up & up!! However bad this recession is I’ve not noticed the price of fuel, road tax, insurance, tyres etc etc going down & only a ‘busy fool’ would undertake a job with all the pit falls of an overweight, wide & high load without the margin to cover the odd unexpected pay out.

I’m winding you up Richmond
I’m a haulier too and we’re all in the same boat,I’ve turned down quite a bit of work in the last 12 months as it just wasn’t worth the money offered, sat back and watched the ‘competition’ do it for stupid money However the ‘competition’ has now downsized from 9 trucks to 2 (I wonder why!?) and can no longer do as many loads,so I’ve actually managed to up my rates a little, not as much as I’d like but I’m getting there!
We had ten trucks and now down to five, still struggling to get decent rates and enough work. Dont know where it will end anymore.however have done enough before not to have sleepless nights about it.need to reinvest and cant see much work worth any-significant investment anymore. Bit to young to retire too.
Did you get sorted? You could try Grimaldi line they run a ship to Cork via Antwerp or from Setubal port also with no transhipment to Cork. Got a good rate for an out of gauge piece going the other way recently off them. sales@ogma.ie Cormac
