hiya,
remember a company called arthur v crutchley bootle area ran allsorts of motors used to drop bits in there in the early 60s for them to take into the docks they put stuff into storage until the ship opened to receive goods, i can also remember he had horses and carts for dock work as well, thanks harry long retired.

Hiya Harry, Arthur V. Crutcley, I think that they must of been going for some time, are they still about ?.
I know that in the 80s they had dark blue E.R.F.s and like you say a place in Bootle.
I.I.R.C. you came out of the Mersey Tunnel ( Kingsway was it ? ) turned left and went down a hill towards the Dock Road. They had an old place on the right which I think could of been some old stables at one time.
Regards Steve

Hello stringy, I used to deliver lots of I.C.I. products mainly for South America to Arthur V. Crutchley in the late 1980s. I remember going to their warehouse on Shore Road Birkenhead opposite Norseman Freights yard.
They had a great bunch of people working for them then but the only driver I can remember was a guy called Tommy.
The bosses name was Harry, along with the two secretaries Doreen and Peggy ? they always asked me if I wanted a brew and if my next drop was at their place in Bootle I would some times take the post for them.
They then moved to, I think it was Bidston Dock Road, the opposite end to where the Falcongate depot used to be.
These two photos were taken in the early 90s and on the first one Crutchley’s shed is on the left, I think it was next to a swing bridge. The old paddle steamer in the back ground was moored there, abandoned for years.
Regards Steve.

On the second photo I think they were starting an Atlantic War Museum or something in the building on the right, I seem to remember an old submarine being moored there.
The E.R.F. was an old motor that I used to drive but my mate who I worked with at the time John Harrison, took the photo’s.

hiya,
it’s the early 60s since i was in crutchleys mushrooman but sounds very much like the the place and the whereabouts sound right there was always horses knocking about the times that i was in there i think in those days the bulk of their work was shipping related i avoided dock work like the plague have sat on that dock road too many times have refused backloads for the same reason, thanks harry long retired.

If it’s the same firm, Jimmy Ellison had a yard in Kirkby and by the mid 70’s had gone over almost completely to Volvo F86’s but by this time he was doing mostly conainer work out of Aintree Container base & Seaforth Dock.

He’s still going as an owner driver with an FH12 he bought new in about 2001, I’m sure it’s the same bloke his wagons were always maroon and always signwritten with “J Ellison”, he must be well past retirement age now.

Ross.

Does anyone remember A.E.Smith-Coggins Liverpool Stevedores.
I have a picture of a Seddon flatbed.
Any ideas of vehicle colour.

has anybody got any photos of Joseph H Taylors of Hawthorn rd my dad was the transport manager or info chers

Some Fred Davies oldies

Cheers
Brian

I am in the process of making oo gauge models of Liverpool Hauliers from the 1950/60s, so any pics of this bygone transport era is great.
Thats why I started this thread in the hope of gems like some of you guys have posted.
Many thanks.

Ross.

Hi, Alfred Dexter’s was a North London firm who ran a trunk to Liverpool specialising in fruit and veg and ran nearly all Atkinsons with I believe the odd Guy. The Garston Bottle Co. Ltd. ran green Leyland 8 wheelers and Trailers which were their own, the red AEC 8 wheeler and trailers which also were signed out as The Garston Bottle Co. Ltd. were in fact owned by a compant called Jeury’s, not sure of the spelling, from Liverpool, both green and reds seemed to run back empty, and were probably on a “C” licence.
