Liverpool Hauliers in the 1960s

With regard to the Evan Cook Ford D picture earlier, I now know that the company specialised in freight
to and from Ireland and Northern Ireland. It was good business sense to acquire Crosshallage whose
address was Crosshall Street in Liverpool. There were regular sailings, day and night from Liverpool
to Belfast and Dublin. Pictures and information from Bootle History Forum.

PeterR:
What a wonderful set of photographs on this thread. Many thanks to you all for posting.

I wonder if you can help me with a little problem that I have. I am interested in the movement of car bodies from the Triumph/BL factories at Speke. There are a couple of photos on this thread which show mid sixties trailers, each with 7 saloon bodies in primer, but I am interested in how they moved the TR6 bodies between Woodend Avenue and Speke Hall Road factories and then moved trimmed TR6 and Stag bodies (without engines and wheels) between Speke and Coventry where the engines were installed.

The mid sixties pics are cars in primer and they seem to show that the loads would have been sheeted and roped but I can’t believe that they did this with finally painted bodies. Does anyone know whether they had special trailers made and whether they were totally copvered ? And which companies did the transport - probably about 20 loads each evening.

Peter

i remember as a kid seeing the car bodies being transported south from the Speke factory and it was by a firm called Harpers.

Scotts Bakery was a very large baker of bread in Liverpool. Their large bakery was on
Dunnings Bridge Road, near to where the Liverpool end of the M57 and M58 Motorways
are nowadays. Scotts employed approx 700 staff. The 3rd picture shows one of their
bread vans exiting the Mersey Tunnel in the centre of Liverpool. The Scotts van looks like an
L A D cabbed Albion, and the lorry behind it looks like a B.R.S. Bristol. The Land Rovers
belonged to the Mersey Tunnel Police Force, possibly the smallest Police Force in the U.K.

Hi Ray. My guess for the Scotts van leaving the tunnel would be a Thames Trader. I think I can just make out a tiny bit of the Trader " snout " ?
Also I think it likely that Traders took over from the 4Ds they appear to have had ?

Regards John.

Hi John, Thank you for your info above. Yes, you are correct, I had a close squint at it again, definitely
a Ford Thames Trader, which makes sense because as you mentioned, Scotts were a long time user of
bonneted Ford Thames vans. They also had several Mobile shops with coachbuilt bodywork mounted
on Karrier Bantam Chassis. Cheers John, Take care and keep safe. Ray.

Great picture Kev, This was a regular sight on the Dock Road in the 1950s & 1960s. Cheers, Ray.

Hi Dennis, Yes, I remember the lorries of Dennis R Pass from many moons ago, but its not a name that I
would see very often. I will have a search around, also, I know someone that has more knowledge of firms
that were seen around Liverpool more than me. I emigrated to The Peoples Republic Of Wigan in 1966, so
my time spent in Liverpool became less frequent. Cheers Dennis, Take care. Ray.

I seem to remember a company called Pass early 1960s from Southport or Ormskirk area with a fleet of Vulcans. The Vulcan Motor and Engineering Company Limited were based at Southport. I believe the name Vulcan came from “Reginald the Dane” and the demonstrator lorry is parked out side Reginalds Viking Tower Waterford Ireland. information Wilkipedia
