Limiters

Is there like a special trick to get past your limiter? I was coming down Windy Hill on the M62 outside Manchester yesterday, doing 89kph, but a bulk tanker sailed past me like I was standing still?

Maybe it had something to do with the fact you were going down hill. Just a thought

that brings up a question ive been meaning to ask for a wee while.

How come a limiter is supposed to limit your speed. But on most occasions if you are going downhill it wont limit your speed? :open_mouth:

Because all it does it cut power not apply brakes

Hi stuartrobbie,

A normal bog-standard (mandatory) speed limiter is designed to limit your powered speed, and doesn’t normally act as any kind of brake. It knows when you’ve reached or exceeded your legal (or set) speed, then deprives you of engine power until you’re back below that set speed.

Some trucks have an overrun device (retarder) that can apply braking force, driver operated or automatically, but that kind of ‘limiter’ is not usually a mandatory fitment.

Maybe the div knocked it out of gear and let it coast.

never had a word said to me about over speeds, but in last month or so a memos gone up on board about it,saying its now being monitored, some way over limiter, there even on about tyres are only speed rated at ----------,and some over speeds are way above that,no mention of sack, warnings, just being monitored, and think of yours and others safety at those speeds

I’ll go to 60mph on motorways if the truck’ll let me…that’s the speed limit :open_mouth:

About 10yrs ago i did about 80 mph down hill on the M20 and i ■■■■ myself.
The truck would have gone faster but i ■■■■ out and started to break.
80 mph in a car is easy but in a fully laden truck is something else.

Use to get overspeeds everyday on my last job, being pushed all the time, but on my new job have not had one yet… That maybe down to the fact the lorry is limited to 52 mph… I thought it would be painful doing that speed, but have got use to it now… Even supermarket trolleys over take me… Lol

Exactly, stay at 91 for long enough and you get an overspeed, yet your still not breaking the speed limit in the UK (unless your off the motorway before you pedantic types jump in).

hi, thanks for the replies with regards to my genuine question. Some of the buses i drive let you go as fast as possible downhill, others limit regardless. I didnt realise there were 2 types therefore my question!
