I’ve sent my licence away to Dvla, I’m signed on @ an Agency, & they have told me when the dates run out(Nxt week) I can’t take to the Road Dvla are shut for the Easter Break, I sent it off goin on 3wks
I’m a little lost.
What dates are running out next week?
If you’ve sent your licence off for medical renewal, and your licence run out next week, I assume on your birthday. Then as far as I’m aware you have to wait until your licence is returned to you, and the agency will want to see it to clarify that you are licenced to drive LGV, as you would be driving unlicenced until its returned/renewed.
As soon as you can on Tuesday ring DVLA ask for RTA Section 88 letter(they will e-mail & send hard copy by post) which will allows you to drive while your application is proceeding, the agency should have advised of this, had to do the same as mine was held up due to Christmas/New Year holiday breaks
If there is a delay then DVLA usually send a letter stating that you can legally continue to drive until its sorted
I can see the agencies point
Its a good lesson for those renewing a medical to get it done well in advance of the expiry date
Getting it done early will still mean it starts from the current expiry date but a covering letter in with the D4 form always helps to confirm that is what you want to happen
Thanks Troops much appreciated

Hi Rog, I’ve got a medical renewal this year, my birthday is 23/7 yet the renewal date on my licence is 14/1/14
How far in advance of renewal date can I have the medical ?
Thanks
Jim
Re the above post all the dates mentioned were on the back of licence, on the front expiry date is 8/11/13. Now I am confused !

Expiry on the front is for Photo renewal.
You can get your medical up to three months before
Dar1976 and getting, thanks for your replies,
So the earliest I can do medical is 14/10/13 which is well after my birthday but what the hell, if it’s good enough for VOSA good enough for me !
Thanks again chaps
Jim
Depending when the last medical was done, the dates might not be the same as a birthday
always go by the expiry date next to the C category
When renewing, don’t send the old licence back to DVLA, best to tick the box to say it’s been “lost”. Then you still have your old one for the agency or any client who needs to check it.

Hi Rog thanks for replying, expiry date on C is 14/01/14 so I subtract 3 months from that for my earliest medical I think ?

I am not 100% certain how much in advance a medical can be done so perhaps a call to dvla medical ?
You will only be able to do the medical if you have received the medical form D4 from DVLA, which in my case turned up last week, my LGV licence runs out end of April so this still gave me plenty time to get a medical and send off the forms, fee, etc before the run out date. DVLA say if you have not got the new licence within three weeks then give them a call. I work for the Fire Service and we have a department that sends off our forms for us once the medical has been done and D4 filled in by the Doc.
Be aware though this form has been renewed and some of our Firefighters have had forms returned as they are the old ones, DVLA didn’t inform anyone of the new forms, you can download them from the net but the nice young woman that dealt with my renewal said the old forms hadn’t been changed on the net, they might well have now but check to make sure otherwise they could be returned and you have to go through filling out a new type again.
Another problem I had was my car licence photo card ran out 18 March 2013, a good six weeks before my LGV ran out, I didn’t realise this at first, I thought they ran out at the same end of April date, so again check. I had put my car renewal to one side (it arrived first) waiting for the LGV renewal to arrive and book my medical so didn’t read it through, my wife noticed the date difference once I had started filling out the LGV renewal, the photo card ran out midnight that night! I only had to wait four days before my medical and get everything sent off but I suppose legally I didn’t have a valid photo card licence, at least now I can say DVLA are renewing it but this sort of situation could be dodgy.
Why DVLA doesn’t send forms out for both renewals at the same time beats me it would save a lot of hassle. They also have history of getting certain entitlements wrong or missing from your renewed licence so always check its the same as before. Cheers Franky.
