Ok Rog, so photo renewel is every 5 yrs now regardless ? even before 45 yrs old ?, cheers…shytalk.
With all the colour printers around these days maybe its a good idea to take a photo copy of your licence before you send them away, that way at least you have proof for the agency and maybe they might take you on’(dont know) .What do you think?
Franklydobo interesting post, a government department having two sets of forms one set being out of date ? And still sending them out ! Freakin’ ell it was complicated enough before, now it’s worse.
You say I must wait till they send me D4 , yet I’ve read on here several times that you can download them independantly (assuming there the right forms ) so I’ll take you up on that.
Next thing, I’m going to have to renew my photo separately and earlier at what cost ? Anybody?
Reason I’m asking all this info is I old like to get all tested up and photoed in my own time not at last minute 'cos they send forms late or wrong type .
Next thing you know I’ll start stressing about the medical and my FREAKING BLOOD PRESSURE WILL RISE !!!
(just re read my post, what a ramble but you get the jist)

Scanning both sides of all parts into the PC is probably the modern easy way to do it

Not quite …
Photo is every 10 years
LGV medical is usually every 5 years from age 45 to 65

So when was the last medical you had then ?
Firstly, sorry for the confusion over Photocard and Paper licence, as both have to be sent off anyway when renewing (only Photocard will be returned). I was trying to point out the Photocard will more than likely run out before the date your LGV entitlement is due to run out, which as in my case caused confusion mainly because I didn’t read the info fully and had visions of a ■■■■ up if I sent off my Photocard renewal then later had to send off my LGV renewal, as the renewal forms do not arrive at the same time.
I presume the Application form can be downloaded as well as the Medical form D4, which having had a quick read through the ‘How to fill in your application’ booklet, informs us that a medical form must not be older than 4 Months or to be exact the Doctors signature and date of the examination. Four Months seems a long time especially for guys over 45 when a medical problem can arise during that time, however that’s what the booklet says.
So after the age of 45 an LGV renewal with medical is required every five years to the age of 65 when it is then required every year. It does say normally every five years after 45 so I presume there is also a short term licence granted for certain medical reasons, it doesn’t mention the period covered of these licences.
Just read in the ‘How to fill in’ booklet in bold letters From 19 January 2013, if you are a full lorry, bus or minibus driving licence holder, you will be issued with a licence valid for a maximum of five years if you supply a photo or renew your entitlement. Does this mean even though you are below 45 years of age! It doesn’t say. It seems only the Photocard licence is issued today so the paper one is being done away with once you return it to DVLA.
Driving licence renewal forms are Driving Licence Renewal Application (D46P)
Renewal of Lorry and Bus entitlement on your driving licence (D47P)
Both forms can be downloaded or above applied for online from www.direct.gov.uk/renewal70
One last thing it does say about driving while your licence is being renewed is that it is allowed as long as, you haven’t been disqualified, DVLA have not refused a licence on medical reasons, you keep to any special conditions that are listed on your licence.
One last point, You can’t renew your Car entitlement online as you can with those above.
Hope this helps! Franky.

Short term can be anything from 1 to 3 years in general depending on what the DVLA medical team deem fit
Mine is every 3 years as I have glaucoma in my right eye but if less than 5 years from last D4 medical then only the right eye is tested - a full D4 medical is not done
The system is weird because my last D4 was in 2008 so you would expect the next D4 to be in 2013 but no … because I had the right eye checked in 2011 it moved the expiry date to 2014 !!
This means I have a full D4 every 6 years with a right eye check in the middle of those 6 years
The expiry dates on my licence for LGV are a max of 3 years
As the above did not make logic sense to me I had DVLA send me a letter explaining that it was the case
2008 full D4 age 50
2011 right eye check
2014 full D4 age 56
2017 right eye check
2020 full D4 age 62
PS - my 10 year photo is due this year - I wonder if the webcam can be used to take pics for that ?
Thanks Franky, good post, so we can surmise from that 4 months max overlap.I’ll resist the temptation to ask you how much photo renewal costs and research it myself!
Jim
Phito renewal is £20, get it done at the Post Office, they take the pcture so it can’t be wrong…

Warning if you renew your photo and your licence is valid till your 45th birthday (mine was passed in 2009) you will get a new one for 5 years, you declare every 5 years (no medical). Then from 45 years old medical required. This is a new rule which came in for new passes from 19th Jan 2013. (This will affect all LGV/PCV holders) Found on GOV.UK if anyone wants to check. I thought the DVLA were taking the ■■■■ after the hard work in getting my licences.

I think you will find that any new LGV driver and any LGV driver under age 45 that sends their licence to DVLA for any reason will get a max 5 year LGV expiry date
Those under age 45 will have to then send in a self cerifying medical form to extend the expiry date by 5 years or until age 45 when the D4 medical rules start
I am fairly sure that is how it will now be without actually looking it up again !!
