Licence Renewal - Happy Days!

I last renewed my licence in 2009 and, as I was 50 at the time, it required renewal (and a medical) in August 2014. Seeing the advice posted here about renewing, and as I had some expired endorsements that I wanted to have removed, I renewed early. I applied online for a “D2 Pack” via dft.gov.uk/dvla/onlineservic … spx?ext=dg and sent it off last week with a new photo and ticking the box to “remove expired endorsements”. Total cost £20.

New licence arrived today - and it expires in February 2019

Glad the new photo trick is still working for those extra 5 years

Was the £20 to have the endorsements removed Raymondo, or was that an admin fee?

Some renewals/exchanges are free, some have a £20 fee, for others the fee is a different amount:

Ah I see. Obviously I hadn’t factored in the fact that you were dealing with a Government department where it’d be far to easy to have uniformity!

I think the key to this “extra” five years lark is to renew the photo (regardless of whether it needs renewing), as this appears to trigger a fresh five-year licence. The fee for simply renewing the photo is… £20.

the photo is the key - I did mine for £24.50 at a post office which does it and includes the photo being taken

Rog, I cannot see where the "extra"five years are, the op has only got it until 2019 which is the five year validity, from Feb this year until Feb 2019, is what you would get anyway, or am I missing something here.

Without this “loophole” I would have been renewing in a few months anyway, which would also have required a medical exam (at significant cost to me). Doing it this way meant I simply had to tick some boxes to confirm my rude good health…

Rog, I’m also a wee bit confused I take it that on the rear of your photo card the run out date against your C C+E is also 2019?

Change photo now and get any categories which are subject to the D4 medical extended to 5 years time from the issue of the new style licence - do it now and get LGV with expiry date in feb 2019

Lets say you have a D4 medical due this august and your current photo expires in 2020 because you supplied it in 2010 then by changing the photo to a new one now their system will issue a new style driving licence with LGV and PCV expiring in 5 years time therefore usurping the D4 medical date

Work out the financial savings before doing

When I did my photo in august last year it removed the short 3 year expiry date !! - bet they re-instate it in august 2018

I`m not trying to be a sour puss but am I the only 1 who sees this as deliberate circumventing of the driver medical procedure, (this next bit is what worries me) which may allow medically unfit drivers to renew their licences?

Yes it does circumvent it but DVLA know and are not concerned

I now have 10 years between D4s (2008 to 2018) age 50 to 60

hold on a minute
lets get this straight
my medical is due next year
my photo is ok for about another 8 years
so can i just renew my photo now even tho its not due to be renewed
and they will cancel next years medical
and i wont have to have one until another 5 years have passed

Provided you do not already have a new style licence then that is how its happening now

So does this mean you are no longer on a “Short Term 3yr LGV Licence” due to you having Glaucoma in your right eye?

YUP

But I bet they re-instate it come 2018

Baffles me why they bother to renew photos. I renewed my digicard with an old photo and my licence with a new photo eight weeks later. Result digicard expires 13/12/2016 and licence expires 26/12/2016, so for eight weeks short of five years I have two different photos, defeats the object of updating them other than the financial one.

Possible to have almost 15 years between the original on the driving licence and when a different one goes onto the digicard

Which proves my point, they are very little use for identity purposes.
