My worry with this is that the DVLA DOES NOT know of it’s own ■■■■ up and when it does will the licence be revoked until a medical is taken. I had the chance to do this, mine expires in 8 weeks but my concious wouldn’t allow me drive an LGV aged 60 by knowingly dodging a 5 year check, If something bad happened in that time do you believe the DVLA would be held responsible ?

Then they need to alter the law that states you need a medical for an LGV every 5 years after the age of 40 ! I may be on my own with this but I don’t think it’s morally correct or responsible to dodge this procedure.

Interesting point, and to a degree I agree with you, although my licence is due for renewal this year and if I can save the cost of a medical examination then I will.
I just wonder what will happen when DVLA eventually spot the error in their system, an unexpected letter saying my licence has been revoked with immediate effect because I haven’t complied with the conditions of that licence would be pretty disastrous.
Mines been with DVLA for 2 weeks now. The firm paid for medical, and sent off the same week. Either it never arrived, it’s lost in the post , there’s a problem with it or thy’ve not got to it yet

My old licence was due to expire on 4th August 2014. My new one was issued on 11th February (i.e. only 5 months and 24 days remaining). There may well be a cut-off period, but it appears not to be six months. Unless I was very lucky and the cut-off is calculated from the date they recieved my application (which by my reckoning was either the 4th or 5th of Feb).
I’m a little confused here. Is the medical at age 45, specifically, not compulsory? I had assumed that when you turned 45, regardless of the expiry date on your licence, you were required to start the 5 year cycle you guys are talking about?
Perhaps I’m muddying my own waters because I passed my C test later than most, age 41. The cat c expiry date on the licence issued after passing was Nov '15 (5 years from pass date). I was expecting to sit a medical for my 45th later this month but have heard nowt from DVLA and after genuinely losing my photocard have a new style replacement with a cat c expiry in 2019.
I don’t have a problem morally with not sitting a medical, I’m in good health and my eyes are fine (touch wood), I’m just a little worried as others have mentioned that the licence may be revoked or if something bad occurs I could be deemed at fault for not having taken a med at 45.

The next D4 medical will be at the expiry date or age 45 - whichever is the later date of the two
A driver for whatever reason could have a D4 medical at age 42 in which case the 5 yearly medicals would be at ages 47 52 57 62
