Other then that just more practice.
Some good YouTube videos out there.

Reversing is different for everyone, and the person who can help you the most is obviously your trainer!

Probably the hardest part when you initially start is remembering which way to turn the steering wheel to make the trailer turn left or right. My advice is that if you look at the bottom of the steering wheel (6 o’clock), when you move it to the left, the trailer will also go left.

Control your speed

Don’t overdue the steering…Only needs a little movement…And as said…Slow and steady…

Thank you guys

Try this…marops.net/portfolio/trailer-reversing-game

For the first weeks/months reversing is all about concentration, thinking, trial & error, mistakes, re-starts and trying again…and again.

Eventually something will ‘click’ and it suddenly becomes more intuitive, a feeling rather than a thought. From that point on I wouldn’t say it is easy by any means, but you can feel when you’re right, and when you need to correct something that’s going wrong. Most of the battle is getting a good position to begin from, and what remains is learning to see when things are going wrong, and knowing how to correct them. That’s all reversing is really, a series of small error corrections as you guide yourself into where you’re going.

Slow ground speed is a good idea, but be prepared to steer quickly or gently as required.

Use all the room that is available to you.

If in doubt, get out and look. It is often far easier to see from outside than inside.

Get others to help by keeping an eye on your blind spots, back end or whatever - most drivers will happily help you out as we all understand how tricky and dangerous it can be.

Use the ‘newbie’ card for as long and as often as you need to.

Take as many shunts as you need, there’s no shame in it.

Don’t be intimidated by thinking others are watching. Most drivers aren’t really interested, and those who are watching are probably trying to learn something from your experiences. Either that, or if they’re like me they’re just rooting for you to succeed, and feeling sympathy for your plight.

Don’t hit anything.

Good luck!

One thing to remember about reversing with the trailer is when you have it on lock and want to bring the unit around to straighten up, the trailer will keep turning as you’re doing so. As above (little movements) - unless you’re pro at it like me and slam the parking break on and just slide straight in to a bay :sunglasses:

Thank you guys.

Done little practice yesterday, much improved from day 1 but still trailer movement confuses my head so i end up making mistakes.

Set up was quite good compare to day 1 but I’m annoyed with this training company, they using some car park to practice this reversing exercise.

Hope it continues to improve.

But

they using some car park to practice this reversing exercise.

is not unusual.

This is why the recommendation is to go and look at the facilities before you book.

This is the link to the list of accredited trainers who, by definition, have to provide all the correct facilities. dft.gov.uk/fyn/lgv.php It may help others when choosing their trainer.

I found this video the other day:

youtube.com/watch?v=_EkoMib4q4Y

The guy seems to have recorded it with good camera angles, covering both the cab & mirrors and the rear of the trailer and seems to explain it well both when he’s doing the manoeuvre and talking the other guy through it. Hope it helps

You’ll reverse into some weird and wonderful places so the harder it more frustrating the more you’ll learn and less you’ll forget.

I think it’s one of them things you just got to keep practicing I genuinely think I was the worst artic reverser in the world when I first started then it does just click really the more you do it.

Testlink. What is it specifically that you are struggling with mate? For example, is the trailer reacting quicker than you can deal with, or is it an alignment issue etc?

ORC:

and… make the shunt worth the effort! I’ve seen drivers move forward just a few feet… in an artic that achieves NOTHING so move forward a decent amount and get the trailer in a better starting position for the reverse… or better still, get the back end of your trailer pointing towards the gap in the first place and you’ve won half the battle!

The school I’m with use a formula:- get it moving (don’t dry-steer) and quickly apply full right lock. Wait until you see a piece of green tape on the rear cross-member of the unit and immediately apply full left lock … and so it continues. No two reverses are the same so after a while you get to realise what’s going on and start making it happen. Keep trying it until the clutch is begging for mercy…

Hello mate,

Struggling at that start, full right lock then full left lock.

My instructor asked me to wait few second but I panic thinking trailer going away from me and I end up making mistake.

Struggling at that start, full right lock then full left lock.

Little wonder - it wont work. If you go full right lock and then full left you’ll end up with the front offside wheel over the yellow line.

Better to reduce the amount of right, get the unit about 24 - 30" from the yellow line and run it parallel with the line until the trailer has bent enough to clear B cone. You’ll have to practice this so you will know without getting out and looking as you clearly wont be able to see the B cone. Having got to that point, left hand down to take the bend out. The outfit will straighten up. Leave a little left hand down on and it will bend gently towards the garage. From there, just ease it in. Tiny movements to make it bend - faster movements to reduce the bend.

Hope this helps, Pete

There you go mate. Digest the above post!!

Once you pass your test, take all the room you can and take it nice and slowly. It soon starts to click into place.
