Lgv reversing guide

It’s a long time since I drove an artic and I’m just in the process of getting back into the industry… I remember when I learned, it just seemed to ‘click’ one day and I went from thinking too much to watching the trailer takes it’s course backwards and going slowly, make slight adjustments usually as needed tended to work for me.

One reason I chose this time of year to get back into HGV work was it’s lighter for longer both mornings and evenings… makes it easier to get into the swing of things rather than in deepest darkest winter months when it’s dark by 5 and you have to rear a trailer in the peeing rain … hopefully you’ll be more comfortable with it by time the nights draw in mate.

It’s true that it takes a while to “click”. In my particular case - 2 years!!! This is why I have endless patience with folks who struggle. But I was trained very badly on a rough area and that doesn’t help anyone.

A good trainer will get many candidates up to test standard for reversing in around an hour. There will always be some who take a bit longer and this shouldn’t matter. But I cant emphasise the importance of properly marked and surfaced training areas. To try and do this in a car park just makes the job harder than it need be. Though, clearly, it can eventually be achieved after considerable hassle and stress that is unnecessary.

Slow and steady, hang your head out of the window, and watch the middle trailer axle.

One of the best tips I ever read on here (which I must say I don’t necessarily follow all the time) is picture where you’re parking, think about how you’d drive away from it if you’d already done it, and try and put it into reverse.

And “DO NOT FEAR THE SHUNT” (or shunts)

It may feel like every driver on the planet is watching you balls it up, but in reality, we’re not arsed. We just want to know that the loo and brew machine aren’t broken.

It takes a while to wind on a load of lock, and what seems like 20 times longer to wind it off.

I have only been driving for 4 weeks and my first 3 days of reversing was a shambles. Over steering and going into a panic thinking everyone is watching and laughing. Then one guy came up to me and told me to relax and look at where I want to put the trailer. Then get the truck setup as best as I can then make small movements with the steering and work the middle wheel out of the three on the trailer and it all just clicked.

I passed in April this year with Pete (am now prostrate kissing the ground in worship  ) and was (probably still am to be honest :grimacing: ) rubbish at reversing. I reckon Ive got one bloody decent reverse in me every shift, the rest are so-so right now, its 50-50  But it gets better, it just takes time and practise. I cant do the ‘hanging out of the window’ thing, but thats just me.
Just breathe, take it slowly, steer into the trailer you can see most of to straighten out the bend and dont be afraid to get out and have a look!
My hubby used to drive me mad about the reverse, couldn’t understand why until I did it myself, used to feel really nauseous about it, but not now
