On a few sites, I have seen predictions that this is going to be one of the harshest winters for a while, with up to thirty days of snow forecast. As to whether they can actually predict weather that far ahead, is anyone’s guess, but it been a while since we have had real heavy snow - in England at least.
This is the one scenario where agency drivers will have a distinct advantage over company drivers. They can always hit the ‘not available’ button if it gets too bad out there…

An old guy at one of my regular drops says he can tell its going to be a hard winter this year. Apparently the warm September and October we’ve had mean a cold winter is coming in his experience. Plus there something else he pointed out which I’ve never noticed before. If you look at some trees and bushes, you’ll notice they are thick full of red berries just now. Apparently he says that’s natures way of giving the birds a chance to stock up on some food ahead of a hard winter as they will struggle to get their usual diet of worms etc. I’m intrigued to find out if he’s right.

I for one hope he is wrong !
Son said back in August he reckoned it was going to be a long, hard winter and he’s usually right.
The berries thing is fairly well known, nature has a way of balancing things out. Still mild for the time of year so I reckon could be into the new year before the worst hits us.
I think every year we get told it’s going to be a record breaking winter for snow and low temperatures, especially by the usual suspects in the media who love to print we’re all doomed story.
worry about the weather when you see a few flights of canadanian honkers gobbing their skeins above you…they only head south in front of bad weather.works without fail

You are assuming that drivers are able to look up, instead of forever looking down - surely not…
When you use the A9 on a weekly basis you get used to driving in the snow , no drama just crack on with it
I live about 9 mile from Elgin, snow very seldom linger for very long where I am yet just a few miles away there can be loads.

mahoosive flock of greylags just north of Dumfries last night, kind of numbers you don’t normally see until the brass monkeys are singing soprano.
won’t be as bad, would it?

It always puzzles me why they keep the brakes on, why don’t they release the brakes, engage a gear to control speed and steer?

Reminds me of the last time we had a fair bit of ice and snow. News footage on a road somewhere showing cars etc all locking the brakes and sliding. But the amount of 4x4 owners (you know, the people who buy big expensive 4x4’s but never use them as anything other than a fashion/wallet statement) who had the brakes locked on and the wheel jammed full left or right. It’s a four wheel drive for Christs sake! Use it as its meant to be used!!! Gentle power and slow careful steering.
I think the other trouble is people are just in too much of a rush and don’t see the point in slowing down until it’s too late.

time for a whiteout and some panic buying methinks…they don’t move for no reason.
I’m looking forward to it, gunna be interesting seeing how the race to the bottom or lowest common denominator (whichever is the case in your own particular yard) pans out, wonder how many sickies will be pulled when there’s 8" of snow on the road when they wake up.
We’ll need at least 64 new memo’s on the first day alone, suspect there’s several new vacancies for lower management are highly likely given a harsh spell, winter tyres? out of the question…cynical moi?
