Left tacho card in overnight

If the tachocard is left in overnight by mistake what can I do to start again without the tacho carrying from when I parked up .
I have only been using a card for about a month and don’t really understand it properly . Btw I only work days from 6am to about 4pm,
No doubt Vosa will think I am driving this tipper all night and issue me an appropriate fine later for this serious crime of forgetting .

get a printout and write on it you left it in overnight.
i left mine in over the weekend not long ago  so i need get plenty of POA in otherwise its unpaid time off when i reach my hours limit :open_mouth:

was it lefy on break mode?? if it was dont worry about it…if it was left on other work, you had better do a print out and write on the back explaining your error and keep it with you. tell your tm what happened so he knows about it when he gets the tacho analysis back.

You don’t need to take the card out overnight–but if you haven’t left it on break, then that’s another story.

I assume the tachograph was not left on rest mode ?

If it was then obviously there’s no problem but I guess it would be too much to hope for, so at the start of the next shift do a printout and write an explanation on it then sign it, there’s not really anything you can do to stop the tachograph screaming at you to take a break until you have a break and reset the driving time.

Good luck

No not left on break . Got phone call just as I was parking up ( hands free  ) after 3 points the other week , and didn’t realise I had forgot to take it out until this morning . I will do a print-out and do what you suggest .

Another thought , I hand my card over every month for a download to the owner of the truck . When things like the above are noticed by Vosa/Dvla or whoever gets the info , will I get contacted directly through the post for my errors or will it be the Owner/ O-Licence owner ?

Thanks for the help.

It wont go to VOSA unless they come in and check records, not quite big brother yet.

Left mine in 3 times so far this month on other work, also, when I was on agency I left my card in a truck of a firm I worked at, and turned up to another firm to work, and noticed no card.

As others have said, print outs, explanation, don’t worry about it, I think the 16hrs of ‘other work’ are usually a give away that it’s just been left in.

I do a print out for both days, so I did 2 for yesterday and 2 for today, all with the same explanation, hand 1 of each into the tm and keep 1 in my truck for 28days or until I remember it’s ok to bin it.

1st did this 4 years ago and never heard anything about it, so don’t worry about it mate, we’re only human :sunglasses:

It will only be noticed by the authorities if you get stopped by VOSA or the police in which case they will deal with you on the spot, a friendly word in your ear is the most likely thing to happen I would think.

By the way you will need two printouts, one to hand in when your card is downloaded and one to keep with you in-case you get stopped

Thanks for all the help .

I’m terrible for doing this, usually once a month or so. I’ve got the same vehicle every day and can’t be arsed to take the card out, plus I’d probably just forget to… I try and make it the very last thing I do to change the mode, I find that keeping my car keys in my trainers usually reminds me when I change from my boots at the end of the day. Odd but it seems to work.

Keep those printouts for the forseeable future as the data on the tacho itself will not be overwritten until this time next year, ie, everything stays on there for 12 months unlike your card which is over-written after 4 weeks. Just incase you get a ‘jobs worth’ a few months down the road who down loads the vehicle unit and asks the question.

MYTH!!!

I had my card downloaded by Norfolk Police last year due to some yellow missing off a Long Vehicle board on the rear of the trailer :unamused:

Anyway, he showed me the info, all the way back to 2007 which was when I got my tacho card.

Well, it’s wrong. I also download the tacho’s for the 5 trucks we have based in Manchester, and I can tell you, there’s a damned site more than 4 weeks info on them, can send you my download if you’d like to analyse it, you can download a free trial of tacho analysis software off tinterweb

Someones ripping us then!
I just copied and pasted this -

With average use, the last 28 working days are stored on the driver card and the last 365 days are stored in the mass memory of the vehicle unit (VU).
The mass memory operates a rolling system in which the latest data automatically overwrites the oldest stored data.
Earlier data is lost if it has not been downloaded or backed up on another data storage media.

from this site-
dtc.jrc.it/helpdesk_faq.php#check_d

Im not disputing you by the way

waynedl is spot on with this, the Driver Card is designed to hold a minimum of 28 days of data, in reality, for most drivers it will hold several months of data even if you use the card every day.

When the memory chip on the card is full the data gets over-written in the same order it was written, oldest records over-written first.

Last time I looked my card which is used daily could be read back about 10 months and that’s not unusual

Im talking about the card that only holds about 4 weeks of data, not the VU itself ofcourse!
