Leaving paid work for unpaid experience?

Company I rang up today said that they’re willing to send me out to watch their drivers to get some experience on artics. Obviously this a great opportunity but there’s always a but! - as you know I’m on paid work driving Class 2 refuse lorries.

He said I can go in any time but with me working Mon-Fri and my weekends busy and/or them not doing much at weekends I’m a bit stuck…

Do I take the experience offer with a possible artic job or so I wait for something else?

The work experience is unpaid.

Hard 1 there Sam but think hard here list all the advantages of doing the unpaid work then list all the disadvantages not easy

As you could lose by giving up a job that you may not be able to back to & not be offered a job on artic then where would you be No work

Try and go on a saturday I know I couldn’t afford to give work up and take a chance on something else
Ask how likely you are to end up with job at the end of it

Well, assuming it is a chance to get some work experience and not simply to work for nothing, then in your position I would probably take a Monday off from the refuse lorries and have one day at it, and take a punt on that being worthwhile to get a foot in the door.

Cash is king in my eyes.

Personally I would take a chance on one day or even two at a push. If you have a day off on the sick you wouldn’t pick up much £££££££££££

I’m thinking of doing the same as my current job has left me with no work for the rest of this week so I’ve now’t to loose I guess.

Will you be doing any driving?
Is there a reasonable prospect of a job with them afterwards?
No to both - don’t do it.
Yes to either - try to fit it in on a Saturday (or a Friday night, or whatever).
Yes to both - do it.

I got my first CE job like that but I wasn’t woring so had nothing to loose.

The problem is Alan, they operate waste tankers, meaning all of their stuff is day shift (or most, they have a few contracts down south which obviously require overnighting from scotland) so with it all being day shift, and not a lot at the weekends, if anything then there’s not much and i wouldn’t be able to do weekends I don’t think, not because I have my own time but because the stuff I can’t do during the week now has to be done at weekends.

Will seriously consider it and get back to them on the chances of something actually coming from it.

PS - can’t remember off by heart but is there something on your license that states when your HGV category was issued?

hi Sam the stuff you have to do at weekends , can u not just put it off for a few weeks or try fitting it in on just sun it would only be a short time and if they happy with you, then you can reassess the situation , also depends how much of a promise this job will be , have they a vacancy for you after the trial ? are the bins agency or a full time position can you not take one week out and then go back , and can you afford the loss in income , very hard Sam , if this dosnt work out may-be another better opertunity round the corner

Ah, see I told a few white lies to land my first Class 2 job, pity I will need to wait a few months to do the same if nothing comes before then lol!

Book a week off and go and see what’s what.

Oh, Sam - how could you? You have brought the whole profession into disrepute for a little personal gain.
Were you not taught that LGV drivers are the last remaining professional body who can be relied upon to be totally accurate in their CVs and job applications.
I am off to hang my head in shame.

What? You mean I missed out in such valuable information? :open_mouth:

Sam

Hi Sam, it was just last week that you and many others gave me very good advice and told me to go for the paid job, but I think your case is a bit different to mine. One thing that’s the same though is the good advice you are getting on here. I doubt you have been in your job long enough to get paid holidays yet but I’m guessing that your boss knows about you passing your C+E recently, (if it was me I’d be shouting it from the rooftops to everybody). Maybe you could ask if you could have the odd day unpaid holiday here and there to go and get C+E experience.I know you must be itching to get on the C+E’s if you can and also it seems like you are being messed about with your wages so how long can you be happy to stay where you are in those circumstances. Having said all of the above, I have always found that the best way to get people to follow your advice is to tell them what they want to hear.
So Sam; in the immortal words of Iggy Pop:-

“WHADDA YA WANNA HEEAAARRRR!!!”

I’m guessing you mean you lied about how long you’ve held your licence?

A lot of companies will stipulate that drivers have held their licences for a certain length of time because it is a condition of their insurance.

Imagine how much ■■■■ you will be in if you have an accident and your employer needs to make a claim. It’s common knowledge that insurance companies will do anything and everything to get out of having to pay out. Every last detail will be gone over with a fine toothed comb, including the dates on your licence. It could turn out to be a very expensive “white lie” for your employer and I hope for your sake that nobody is injured or killed.

I hope this hasn’t worried you.

You can’t lie about how long you’ve had your licence. However, you can lie about how much driving you have done since you got your licence.

+1 Best thing to do imo.

Cheers

It hasn’t worried me actually because you couldn’t be more wrong.
