Leaving a job.how much notice

I am a bit fed up with my job and want to leave asap…could i just say on monday I want to go now hand everything in and walk away?
I been there for 1 .5 years…I got terms and conditions but i never signed the contract…

1 week is usually the norm, however,do it by the book, and when you need a reference, providing you’ve kept your nose clean, you’ll get one when the need arises.

If you just walk out,it could come back to haunt you in the long term.

Never burn your bridges.

Ken.

You have a legally binding contract, even if this is not in writing. In fact, if you buy a Mars Bar from a shop you enter into a legal contract.

Theoretically he might be able to persue a Small Claims Court case against you for his loss of earnings but in reality he would be unlikely to do so.

It’s probably fairest and best in the long term to give him a week’s notice.

Most companies will threaten you with holding back holiday pay, they can’t, but as Quinny said, dont burn your bridges :bulb:

Just another point…

If you just walk out, your new boss might feel that you will do the same to him, whereas if you do it properly, then he will be prepared to wait a week for your services.

A slight example…

When I left my previous employer,I went to work for an agency.Once I’d found my agency feet,I moved on to the agency I’m now with, but did it properly.I still get the old agency boss ringing me to see If I’ll go back full time with him,but I politely decline each time,That’s because I was polite to him when I moved on.

You get the picture?

Ken.

What Ken said.

Walking off the job without giving notice is one of the things that does come up regularly when you’re checking references, because it can be truthfully said without actually giving a negative slant, and is rather difficult to disprove once said.

There are a couple of other things to consider. Could the reasons for your dissatisfaction be sorted by going to your boss and informing him of your intention to leave? Not threatening, I stress; simply telling him that you’ve found another job and wish to give notice as per. It may open the door to dialogue between the two of you which might improve your pay and conditions, something you might both have thought of doing but never got round to.

The other thing is that you should ideally have another job lined up ready to go to. I know some will disagree with me on this, but no job’s as bad as the dole IMHO, especially if you’ve been there a while; 18 months isn’t bad on tyre-fitting where staff turnover tends to be fairly high. It’s also far easier to get a new job when you’re already employed.

Whichever way you go, good luck with it.

i can go straight into another job as have been offered 2 jobs, but neither start for a month…the job i am in.my controller has been very difficult since i started but it now got much worse…i have already spoken to the boss twice now and nothing has happened.a few other drivers asked for a pay rise but we got told nothing till at least next year…we was promised a pay rise in january 2008.also for the past 3 weeks i have been asking for van stock, things like puncture repair patches and glue and havent got anything and if i ring up i just get talked down by anyone in the office…i am ringing the boss again monday morning as today has been a nightmare again…no kidding i really hate this job now and my missus can see its getting me down a bit.

Sounds like you’ve got a bum deal mate.
Certainly doesn’t sound like they respect you at all.

When I left my last job I wrote a letter and explained, in full, the reasons why I was leaving.
I also said in the letter that I would be willing to work my term, but did have other jobs lined up.

They just let me go that very day.

Another thing is, if you REALLY want to go, why not hand your notice in and take any holiday you have unused?

Its a perfectly legitimate thing to do.

Alex

i got nearly 2.5 weeks of holiday left so am thinking on monday morning to ring boss and say come get the van monday afternoon…i will work the monday and think that will be it hopefully then just do agency work for a month or so…i done agency before and loved it…diffrent jobs each week or evan each day.

oh yeah i tried ringing my boss just now but he is unavalable to talk to me…1 other bit my controller is also my bosses wife/girlfriend unsure of which,so that dont help

Seems you’re on a hiding to nothing. Was in a similar situation myself a few years ago, so I sympathise; I think Scarab’s suggestion is excellent, gives you a bit of leeway and you’ve got some guaranteed money coming in while you find something else. Only downer of course is that you won’t have much holiday to come this year.

Just do it by the book, dont give them the excuse to do anything underhand to you.

I was always led to believe if you get paid weekly… give a weeks notice if paid monthly…give a month. But i would do whay they wanted if they were always fair with you.Always try to leave on good terms never burn your Bridges. All the firms i have worked for yes ive had a few disagreements but all of them would give me a ref and have me back if there was a job going .

If you have T&C’s and not signed since you joined, be careful as having the contract for this period of time implies acceptance.

Use your T&C’s, play it by the book.

well me and my controller have had words with each other.(no shouting from me.lots from her)but she isnt the easiest person to talk to.very snappy and very short words.

.I dont think even if i worked a week they would ever give me a good referance.they never did to another driver who left a few weeks ago, they gave him a bad reference and made things up.

Someone correct me if im wrong but I was always led to believe a company CAN NOT give you a bad referance. The worst they can do is say if you were a bad time keeper always sick etc. Certainly cant say you did this did that are a bad influance etc.

There are allowed to give a bad reference but it needs to be truthful, so the fact they “made things up” would be illegal.

It is often what a reference does not say which can tell you more about someone who’s applying for a job.

Do the decent thing and leave with your head held high. I always worked from the monthly pay = montly notice thing. You arent allowed to give a bad reference nowadays but a brief one says it all…

I once gave an agency 3 weeks notice instead of 4. I got a bill for £1200 and a threat of a court summons. This wasnt a driving job, was IT. Told the agency I would see them in court and never did. Whilst I am on the subect I would never do any form of work for BCL in warrington ever again. In particular the agent Neil!

Obviously that is my own personal opinion and not the opinion of trucknet blah blah blah

well I have now left…they agreed to let me work monday till 5pm then have the rest of the week as paid holiday
Going to look for new job today…
Oh yeah missus said cut the grass ,clean the house and do the dishes if i am staying home :frowning:
