When my kids did their driving lessons / test - they then opted for the Pass Plus. This was a two hour plus extra lesson with the instructor who took them onto the motorway and taught them how to use it properly.
I don’t see why they just couldn’t make the Pass Plus mandatory as it meant that those on the motorway doing this had at least enough skills to pass their test !
Mandatory lessons on the motorway are needed though as many people are actually afraid to drive on them or just have no clue !
Totally agree Marvin but in reality motorway driving should have been in the learning and test years ago and then we might not see the attrocious standards of driving we see today on them.
It seems just expecting drivers to learn the theory from a book or a PC is too much for most. I still think it will be really hard for new drivers to drive correctly when they see the way most others drive. IE, no lane dicipline, no safe distance and not paying enough attention to what is going on.

Disagree with both of you, if people were taught to drive properly on C, B and A roads then dual carriage ways and motorways would follow naturally. When I learnt the speed limits on the minor roads was 70 mph, nearest dual was 18 miles away and motorway over 100 miles, so never an option, as it remains for anyone learning today in the same area (although there is now a very short stretch of dual a couple of miles away from there).
As with everything these days, things are dumbed down, ‘safety’ is paramount, people are not taught to drive to the road conditions, that if it is clear then ‘speed up, change up’, that’s why so many cretins are happy to drive at sub-50 mph on motorways now, they haven’t been taught properly, they will never learn and it will always get worse. The problem is not whith the roads people are taught to drive on, it’s the abject failure of the system in teaching them to drive in the first place.

Really, how the hell do you work that one out? How can being taught properly on A roads (which most are I might add) have any reflection on the principles of motorway driving?
Why do think a lot of car drivers do not know how to join or leave a M/way or Dual C/Way?
How can you learn lane discipline on an A road?
How often did you drive constantly at 70 mph on an A road?
I could go on and on and on but I do not think you have really thought about your crazy ideas!
Not an opinion is site, deary me guys, is this not what these forums are all about? You are drivers ffs , do you not have an opinion about these matters?
It’s really quite important that us professionals understand what is right and what is wrong. Is it not?

Hi Albion/Damon, how’s trix? Been a while since you’ve had a snipe from the undergrowth, welcome back.
Ah maoster, you have always been one of the smarter cookies on here but do not go spoiling my fun!
Albion■■? Damon■■? Read a few of their comments along the way!
Anyway Jake here and I need a good discussion.

See Brake the self appointed road fixers [emoji6] had to get their tuppence in wanting to ban access to motorways with unless x yrs driving etc
Why anyone wants to ask that shower anything is beyond me other than bit of news fill
I think it’s a good idea and should be mandatory for part of lessons.
It’s bit worrying left up to instructor to decide if pupil good enough, if they’re good enough to pass test then why differentiate not good enough for motorway lesson.
Wonder how many actually have dual controls anymore ?

BRAKE won’t employ anyone if they say they are going to come to work in a motor vehicle…which shows how much confidence they have in their own experts.
You could say they are to road safety what atheism is to theology.

if you live near a motorway you should be expected to use it before you get given a licence.
+1
Spot on. It should be compulsory.
I remember taking a couple of additional lessons after I passed my car licence (30 years ago) to make sure I was ready for th3 Motorway. It was a good call as 2 weeks later, i had to take my gran down to Portsmouth from Glasgow. As a 17 year old I was ■■■■■■■■ myself at the prospect but the additional lessons stood me in good stead.
