Learners allowed on the motorway

…from Monday 4th June but only in a dual controlled car and with an ADI so keep your eyes peeled !!

Doesn’t seem like a big deal. Heck if you live near a motorway you should be expected to use it before you get given a licence.

At least you will be able to spot them. There’s enough people on the motorways (and other roads) at the moment who drive like they haven’t passed a test anyway.

At least they’ll be driving appropriately. I see enough knobs on the motorway daily driving truck, bus, car, van etc that actually a learner being shown the motorway will be a great benefit long term

Probably have more respect and ■■■■■ than some on the road users.
With an ADI they will (should!) be under control at all times, dual controls won’t add much, but it’s a selling point to the general public.
Observation is key, along with the confidence to match the traffic speed.
Have fun

Will this be part of driving test? if not doubt many instructors will take learners on motorways unless they are doing additional training…

Hi there
As far as I remember, it’s to allow training and won’t be part of the test. Some parts of the UK are miles away from an M road.
Cheers
Paul

Motorway driving isn’t being introduced to the driving test as part of this change.

Not part of the test, my wife’s an ADI and she’ll take them on there once they reach test standard but then we do live close to the M4 so it’ll be easy .

I think it’s a great idea, should have been done years ago. Feel sorry for any Instructor though, trying to tell the student what is correct when so many others are doing it wrong.
Will it make a difference or will these drivers who have been shown properly instead of just having to learn from a book then drive the way they have been shown or will they do like most and do their own thing?

personally I reckon it’s an accident waiting to happen, yes the instructor will be there with dual controls but how many times have you been behind a learner on normal roads and they don’t make progress like they are supposed to[in my time you failed a test for not making progress]the same could happen on a motorway when the instructor tells them to speed up,their bottle could go when the likes of us are going by them,or they might stall,or brake suddenly,i am absolutely against it,as I said an accident waiting to happen.

Works perfectly well in most European countries where on average the motorway speeds are higher than here, something has to be done to improve the standard of motorway driving in the UK which is amongst the worst in Europe

I worry about the standards of some of these ADI’s who will be teaching these learners. I worry that the ADI will quite happily sit there as the learner comes down the empty on slip at 25mph and is then encouraged to “move straight across out of the lorry lane”.

You really think that’ll happen ? I don’t think so.

And if you don’t??

The majority of my driving til age 38 was on motorways but living in East Norfolk, it was an hour to the nearest dual carriageway that looked like a motorway (A14 at Newmarket). Another 20 minutes would have got me to the M11. I didn’t have training on the Mways but I hope I use them correctly which doesn’t involve sitting in an outer lane with the lane to my left empty or tailgating etc etc.

It’s also generally those that use them most that sit in the middle or overtaking lanes.

I live and work in The Highlands.

What is a “Motorway”?
