Thanks Dave, was wondering when they’d be reopening

End of the month Sarge, saw it in the local paper. Two Brothers who are already running a cafe in Church Stretton have bought it and hope to get it going properly with longer hours and overnight parking for LGV’s.
Cheers Dave.
I’ve never been in the Lazy Trout for many many years and If I’m being honest, I can’t remember what the food was like, but I have no recollection of being rushed into A&E, so I assume it must have been o.k…presumably, but I do remember that mynah bird. It would appear therefore, To my deranged mind at least, that this particular oasis is destined to be remembered as much for it’s ornithological occupant as it is for it’s culinary delights. Much as in the same way, that other notable beacon of safety and comfort for wagon drivers, the Jungle cafe, on the climb up over Shap fell , will no doubt be forever remembered as the workplace of a ginger piece that had the ’ hots ’ for a certain good looking, under aged, rig jockey from the Barrow area.
Don’t forget, the grape is a good source of vitamin C.
Cheers. Eddie.

Many years since the Mynah bird was there Eddie. A family called Farmer owned it for about 20 years until they retired about 5 years ago. It was a brilliant old style transport cafe with good food at sensible prices. It has been open intermittently since. Hope the new owners get it back to how it used to be. They are proposing to build up trade and open for longer hours with overnight parking once they get it established again.
Cheers Dave.
I’m off on a tangent again, but I remember the café at Turnhill (A41) had a mynah bird, too.

Allegedly they walk on water …just like you ROF …! regards Keith .PS they also have very big flippers !
Evening all,
Ah The Lazy Trout…just what my, (angry), Auntie called me when she discovered that I was in the habit, when working the “lower fields”, (on Dry Hill, Raglan, right opposite the brooding Long Myndd, to the left of Daves picture of the Lazy Trout), of parking the David Brown Cropmaster…(behind the hedge)…and nipping across the A49 for a cuppa, and break in the Café…Dry Hill is just as brooding, steep, and barren as the Long Myndd…but it had a warm nice Café at its base…and I needed it, I can tell you!
Cheerio for now.
Think the bird was called Skip? Used to go in in the late 60s and early 70s with my Dad, big draw for a kid having a talking bird!
Got rid of mine a few years back. Couldn’t get a word in.
How many of you have stopped at the Lazy Trout Cafe, on the A49 between Church Stretton and Craven Arms
Its been going since 1937, and is one of the few old style transport cafes still going. Its a sad fact that with compulsary breaks and all the rules and such, that there are very few decent places left, for drivers to stop and get decent food and drink
Best breakfast in the country at the Trout, not been in for a few years as now on nights, but always made time to call there when i was down that way.
I can remember calling there when i used to go with my dad in the school hols back in the 70`s, they used to have a minor bird in there that would speak now and again, which had me fascinated as a young lad.
Still a great cafe thats got no matching plates, cups or cutlery but with great food, just how a transport cafe should be
The Lazy Trout changed hands just over 12 months ago, Jean and Mick Farmer and their son Sean retired, but its still a good cafe, very little change. Still do good grub at reasonable prices. I call in there most weeks.

I used the Lazy Trout in the 70s,good food, nice place.
I remember that Mynah bird as well.Wasn’t there a notice asking drivers not to teach it to swear? What an invitation to do the opposite.
Nice to know that it’s still going - since 1937,must be some sort of a record.
I remember that miner bird in the sixties and you would hear that bird shouting (OK SKIP), and there would be Jack Bright (North Shropshire Transport) at that time trying to learn it to swear, Happy memories (Jack R.I.P)
They haven,t had a Mynah Bird for 25 yeaars or more, don,t think the hygiene boys would like it these days. Caused a few laughs back in the sixties and seventies, part of the old transport world which has sadly gone.
Still a few characters get in there, old and new.
