Lazy Trout Cafe

Dave the Renegade:
How many of you have stopped at the Lazy Trout Cafe, on the A49 between Church Stretton and Craven Arms
Its been going since 1937, and is one of the few old style transport cafes still going. Its a sad fact that with compulsary breaks and all the rules and such, that there are very few decent places left, for drivers to stop and get decent food and drink

The phone number is still Jeans home number, she retired and lives next door. The cafe will be shut for refurbishing for some time.I spoke to her 2weeks ago
,trying to book a breakfast for 10 welsh supporters on way to Edinburgh. She misses the craic.

The people who run the cafe now are friendly. Mick and Jean had a very good rapport with everyone and are missed.

O how the memories came flooding back. walking in through the door in the early seventies and hearing someone say “Ok Skip” and turning round to see all the drivers grining at you. that bird spoke so clearly. the meals were good and very frendly people.the truck park was not that easy being on a slope espically in the snow. They used to have a big Trout out side which went missing one night, I think the local young farmers got the blame. I go past there now and again but it never seems to be the right time to stop. must make time.
Regards Keith

I went past the Lazy Trout late last night, the cones are still across the entrance but the cafe looks really well in the twylight, all painted up. does anyone know when it is reopening?
Regards Keith.

Its supposed be undergoing refurbishment, but its been closed about six weeks now and everytime Ive gone past there the doors are shut,. I would have thought if they are working on it there would be more signs of activity.

NOW THERE IS A CAFE TO REMEMBER.I WELL REMEMBER THE MYNAH BIRD IN THE CAGE DOWN THE END OF THE CAFE.YOU NEVER SAT TO CLOSE TO THE CAGE AS IT USED TO CRAP OUT THE SIDE AT YOU! LAST WENT IN THERE ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO JUST BEFORE I PACKED UP DRIVING FULL TIME.HAPPY DAYS.BOB.

I remember the Lazy Trout was workin on 7.5 t before my lgv in the 80s for palmer & harvey delivering to the sweet shops in the area from worcester.Always a very good brekkie. But can any one remember the sign on the counter… sorry but TRUCK DRIVERS GET SERVED FIRST… always second best wiv jo public but in the real world WE ARE KING… Keep On Truckin Lads miss the cafe cause im livin in Tenerife now but very fond memories…

The Lazy Trout was still closed when I passed it a couple of weeks ago, don’t know why, be a pity if it does not open again, as it was always a good place.

Just passed it today and there is a sign up saying, reopens 11th may

Tonyb

Great news Tony, hope its still as good, will call in there in a couple of weeks and give it a try.
Cheers Dave.

The Lazy Trout pictured today, as said by Tonyb reopens on the 11th May.

The Lazy Trout reopened today, was in there this morning. There are new people running it, opening from 6am till 9pm, mon to friday, 6am to 6pm saturday and sundays. Had a breakfast which was very good, looks as if they mean to give it a good go, nice to see it open again.

given that this is a fairly old cafe and part of the history of uk road haulage. wouldnt it be a good idea if truck and driver done a piece on it for a future edition?..

Glad to hear its open again, I’ll call in on a break pass it every night on my way from Oswestry to Hereford and then back upto Carnforth. Twisty old road that A49, glad I’m not loaded going down that hill into Hereford, its just getting back up it coming home with a full trailer that can make the 420 scania puff a bit

Been in there a few times over the last few weeks, foods good reasonable priced, also the people running it have been running a cafe before. They also now allow overnight parking.

Dave the Renegade:
. They also now allow overnight parking.

Thats handy to know, we do a lot of runs down to South Wales and usually run out of time around Shrewsbury area (ish) . not that far south to stop over and support a traditional transport caff.

Anyone know how much they charge for parking?

Was in the Lazy Trout today, its £5 to park overnight, get your ticket at the till. They are open until 9pm,open in the mornings at 6am.
