On medical grounds my truck licence has been revoked …for good.
But car license is unaffected ?
Can i relicense our old F12 with a small Flatbed single axle trailer so the missus who only has a C1 +e license is able to take it to shows…Any ideas ? Or is it just the unit she can drive ? Its over 7.5 tonne by itself .
And please no guesses !
Thanks. Old Git

If you draw a trailer its considered a load. So it will be a goods vehicle and come under the regs for goods vehicles. If you re license the F12 for private use and do not carry a load you can drive it with a car license.

Not sure on that mike as the unit weighs in at over 7.5 ton unladen and the vehicles gross weight takes it outside C1 as this is only upto 7.5 ton. Even privately taxed a tacho will still be required. So I think his mrs will need to do her class C to be able to drive it
It goes on GVW, not actual weight, so a Cat C (class 2) will be needed.
Tachograph needs to be fitted and calibrated.
Can still tax it private/light goods.
All the best for your project mate, wish mine weren’t stuck in a shed still…

Yeah sorry you’re correct. The driving licence categorys are indeed weight based. I think even licensing it as private is unessecary as it looks like it has an exemption for tachos. I seen in another post he says its a 1986 F12, according to this…
link historic vehicles (over 25 years old) are exempt from tacho rules if they’re engaged in non commercial carriage/use. That still leaves the licence problem for the unit. Looks like a no go?
How the licence system works for those with just the pre 1997 LGV categories C1 and C1+E
The fact that it is used for private or commercial purposes makes no difference to the current licencing rules
C1 any rigid vehicle not more than 7.5 tonnes GVW plated weight
C1+E with 107 code - same as C1 but can have a trailer as long as the GVW of the C1 added to the plated MAM of the trailer is not more than 8.250 tonnes total
EXAMPLES -
7.5 GVW + 750 kgs plated MAM trailer = 8250
5.0 GVW + 3.250 kgs plated MAM trailer = 8250
Licences go on the maximum plated GVW/MAM weights and not actual weights unless the vehicle has more than a total of 9 seats when it goes into PCV categories
If your truck licence is revoked but not your car licence, can you not appeal the decision, based on what you need the licence for, they may consider giving you a very restricted one based on your needs. just a thought and maybe worth trying
It must be a 6x2 to be over 7.5t unladen.

Hi, it is a 6 x 2,
How about if i license it as a motorhome ? And remove the 5th wheel, weight might ■■? Be under 7.5t.
As far as I can see, regardless of any exemption, no tachograph is required to be fitted or used because the vehicle is not going to be used to carry goods and is not adapted to carry more than 9 passengers (Article 3 - (EEC) No 3821/85 and Article 2.1 (EC) 561/2006).
However the trailer would be classed as goods (Section 92 - Transport Act 1968), but even to drive the unit would require a cat C licence if it’s over 7½ tonne.

The tacho is good news, I reckon if i strip off the extended range tanks, dump the fifth wheel, and a lot of extra crap and use a smaller air tank as theres no trailer and dump any other s##t i can loose i could get the weight under 7.5tonnes…then if i get a weighbridge ticket and relicence as a private vehicle we are there .
Shame about the trailer though
And if its not a workhorse i could use some lighter wheels too
Perhaps then it will actually do 85 MPH ! Lol.
To make it a C1 and not a C you not only need to get the actual weight below 7.5 tonnes but you need it replating to a max of 7.5 tonnes
I believe you have to have a certain amount of load weight between actual weight and plated GVW

Hi,
If thats right its a typical govt. F##k up, i want to show the old girl not bloody carry anything, FFS she has over 2.3 Million k’s on the clock. And the body is quite tidy, in a lot of lovely shades of primer at present ready nearly for a stunning new paint job.

Which would rule out the trailer on licencing laws if nothing else.

You need it to be a difference between actual weight and GVW so you can get a couple of people plus their bits into it without exceeding the GVW

I’ve been looking at this a bit more and am now not sure that the trailer would be classed as goods.
I was thinking of a law case (Booth v DPP) where the courts found against a company that were using a tractor unit to ferry trailers to and from test, the court ruled that in that case the trailers were goods.
However on reflection I don’t think that would apply to the situation of taking a unit and trailer to shows.
Article 185 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 says that ““trailer” means a vehicle drawn by a motor vehicle”.
And
Article 58 of the Goods Vehicles (Licensing of Operators) Act 1995 says ““goods vehicle” means a motor vehicle constructed or adapted for use for the carriage of goods, or a trailer so constructed or adapted”.
All of which suggests, to me at-least, that a trailer is generally part of the vehicle and would not generally be regarded as “goods”.
This suggests that the vehicle you’re want to use for shows could be driven with a cat C1+E licence as long as the unit does not exceed 7½ tonne and the total combination of unit and trailer does not exceed 12,000 kg, but as ROG said if the cat C+E has a code 107 against it the combined vehicle weight limit would be limited to 8250 kg.
If there’s no code 107 involved, and if it would be possible to get the weights down to suit, I would suggest getting written confirmation from VOSA before proceeding to far with the project
It will still be illegal to do 85 mph on public roads with it though

Well , I have been thumbing old manuals and thinking !!! , yep the old grey matter was steaming, I reckon i can get the weight down to just under 6.4 tonnes ish, and whilst i may be a fat old git me and the missus and grub and fuel dont weigh in at 1100kg, especially with the small fuel tank i can fit !.. So we can both drive the old girl if she is replated at that weight. Yipee.
And with no fifth wheel , reduced springs, less fuel tanks etc etc we can call it a motorhome…MAYBE even building a pod on the back for a shower/toilet ?..i am thinking aloud now .
Any other doubts folks ?h

It is a little strange and causes some confusion for many because the full C1+E has a GTW (max actual weight) of 12 tonnes but the C1+E with the 107 code has a max combined MAM (max possible weight) of 8.250 tonnes

Not sure the motorhome idea will fly
If it is an actual weight of 6.4 and plated at say 6.750 then that leaves the possibility for a trailer plated at 1.5 tonnes for a C1+E 107 licence
