i knew it wouldnt take long for you two to start       but by my reckoning he started in the 70s and was still running there in the 90s.he also took a oldboy who won the the radio 2 or 4 comp to have breakfast in babylon.and when i asked on the astran thred who had done the most trips you all declined to answer.and remember another of your astran mates said dow were a fly by night firm.so im with aidy your opinions if your not an astran subby you aint nothing. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Didn’t the jail term prove something about Dow Freight. I don’t ever remember Bob Paul being in prison :stuck_out_tongue:

Well Dreva

The trip count was not important it was how you did the trip, safely and on time was more important, helping your mates was paramount,me i never kept count, but if it’s important more than I can remember :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Exactly the point Archie, why dont others see it this way, thank you

Roger

I do, there was no one better than anyone else, some were a pleasure to have around, some were a pain in the arse, some could tell great stories and some sat contemplating their previous trips.

Unfortunately you have just buried another one of “my greats” Roger.

There were some Gentlemen of the road and most passed through the National Hotel.

More Beer George

If this carries on much longer we will be errecting churches and monuments to worship the great Laurence ,a Driver who did no more than most ME drivers,in fact I know more ,who did do more, but it makes good reading ,stories and pics are always great but lets not blow it out of all proportion

Roger Haywood

Roger,

Of course you are not wrong, but i think what parts Laurence from the vast majority of drivers is the fact that he has the capability to put his experiences into words, and also in a most entertaining fashion, hence i expect the reason he was paid for his tales of adventure by the mag’s.

Laurence himself would i think tell you he is no driving god, but much of what he did he learnt the hard way, as so many men did at the time, and i believe he has never stated otherwise.

I have retrieved quite a few trucks myself in years gone past, in various countries, that drivers have abandoned when things have gone wrong. But i think you would agree that LK would not be included in that sorry class of driver…

We all enjoy reading his tales of old, and you quite rightly state that there were many men who had vastly more experience at the time, but alas there were but a short handfull that had the skill to put it down on paper in such an entertaining fashion.

LONG LIVE THE KIELY.

Regards Steve.

Well said Steve

I for one would be very sorry if Laurence Kiely stopped posting on here as I really did enjoy reading the two stories that he posted.
Hey Roger, how come you never tell us of any of your experiences that must of happened to you, surely there must of been one trip that you remember.

Regards Steve.

Hello Lads,
Just because I’ve been AWOL for a few days doesn’t mean my Leonine feelings are hurt becuase I’ve been ‘canonized’ or called a ghost violinist! On the contrary you guys make all the hours it takes to put these pieces together worth it. OK I do get a lot of lookers at my web site but this page is after all a forum for all to say within reason what they like. It is not Laurence Kiely’s personal publishing site!
Now, whatever anyone does in life, you can not please all the people all the time. So, there will be those who think they are or were better than the rest, were in the top league not for underlings like the rest of us. But that sort of self appraisal, which is no more than an unproven opinion, only antagonises the rest. At the end of the day we are all our own individual leagues if you like by the very nature of the job we did. All lonesome cowboy stuff.
Whatever I put up on this site whether a snippet or a full blown story and any of you think I’ve made a complete balls up then SAY SO, but say why too. None of us should be vying for pole position for a ‘career’ most of us did some twenty years ago. We are still here where other sad souls are not.

Right, that’s the Sunday Sermon out the way. Many of you have shown an avid interest in the Back to Kuwait story published in TRUCK way back in 1991. Well, I have finally scanned the original slides and piece something together. It was hard because in those days TRUCK was owned by FF Publishing and their editorial team of the day implied that ‘they’ and ‘we’ did this, did that. Did they f*****
The published piece was canonized not me. They were not interested in any story covering England to Turkey as that had already been done by the editor George Bennett. George was a good guy who I met many times over the years but, he was under orders from his publishing employers.
So, what I’ve done this week is put together a rather large piece starting from the beginning. It is called

‘PRICKED’

This is the true Part One never been seen anywhere before. Part Two and maybe three will follow in the next few days or so. You can get a magazine copy as a PDF file as well from my site if you so wish.

A great start to the story again. I am sat here rooted to the spot for the next painful installment. I am still on the same pills but I don’t recall a blonde bird.

Flucloxacillin
500mg Paracetamol
Water Softeners

They make me ■■■■ like a station horse and it is more painful each time

YOU ARE SUCH AN ■■■■■■■ ROGER

I too remember the Laurence Kiely articles in trucking magazines when I started out in the mid 1980’s, and was very much inspired by them.

To be perfectly honest, I thought he was dead, I seem to remember reading about a very bad accident he had in the dim and distant past?

Glad I have, as ever, got the info wrong!
