Here we are setting off on the Leyland to Shap 2014 run. In pursuit of S.O.M.'s big J’s on trunk on the A6. Got past The Highway’s Café at Broughton ok but ■■■■■■■■■■ wanted to stop at The Mayfield or Dirty Dicks as we got behind two of McKelvie’s Fodens at Garstang. Met two of Walker Bros. at Heysham heading south at Lancaster. As we came to Truckhaven at Carnforth three of R.O.Hodson’s A.E.C. 6 wheelers were just leaving loaded to the hilt, followed by two of Shap Granite’s 8 wheel Fodens each with two big round pipes on. There was a nice line up of Croppers of Kendal Seddons as we passed the paper mill at Burnside. Got held up just before Strawberry bank by Barnes and Nelson’s backing in off the road. The next hold up before we got to the jungle was four of Robsons of Carlisle’s 8 wheel Fodens. Just got past them when one of James Kemps from Leslie and one of Allisons of Dundee were just pulling out of The Plough after having a pint of shandy. When we got to The Jungle it was full with B.R.S. ,Pickfords, Sutherlands, McPhearson, Gibbs, Kelmans of Turiff, Caledonians and many more. So we just went straight on to Shap summit for a quick break. We then went to Shap village hall for a bit of tea and cake along with a lot of diesel fumes. No sign of the bigJ 8 Potters. The search goes on!!!
Errrrrrr,…Lance,…summats wrong in your narration of your A 6
adventure . I think I know what it is . :bulb: How did you miss seeing any of Charles Alexander

Hope you all had a good day .
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
At the top of Shap .
After the meeting of leaning on the wagon flat and joined by Bibs while waiting for Leyland 600 we got a tip off that there was a big J in Shap village behind the pub, but to no avail, it was only Tommy Gasgill’s old ERF resting in peace. Just goes to show these Stobbart spotters don’t know everything.
I presume you thought it would have been a golden opportunity to photograph those two extra pots lurking under the back of the Big J cab?

Hi Lance do you remember my Dad having one the same as this with a 220 ■■■■■■■ in that he bought off Eric Dugdale from Chatburn, That was to replace the Ex SOM A series with the 240 Gardner in it he had, That 240 was rebuilt by Walling and was the biggest oil user ever after that. I think it was the beginning of the end of Dad using Walling. From what I remember the 220 went better than that 240. Pity it wasn’t a Big J with the 8 potter in it

This has been posted by a Gent possessing what I can only described as having “A fine fertile imagination”( well he is a Lancastrian ) only thing missing was the sighting of a Guy Big J with the elusive 8 potter engine! Oh! and any Scots driver worth his salt never supped “Shandy” in the Plough at Selside, more like a few Scotches and Chasers, so that is a glaring mistake for a kick off
Cheers Bewick

Hi Lance, when are you out next with the F12 ?I was told that there is a show on at Scorton soon do you usually go to it ?
Got to keep this little thread up fron’t and centre eh! here’s a shot of one of the tippers we ran in the '70’s,a Millmoor body on a Peak chassis with twin Edbros. It’s parked next an MW tipper in our Milnthorpe yard,Note the brand new, unused, shovel in the bracket ( for those that don’t know what a shovel is it’s a hand held implement we used to use for trimming off loads of Frag and pig iron
Cheers Bewick.
I must say Bewick I have never liked or trusted twin ram tipping gear, I think single ram’s are a lot safer, yes I have seen both tipped over but more twin ram ones than singles

One for you Bewick.
Taken on Sunday. 20 years on! One of your old wagons that is still in use. That would be at Ravenstonesdale between Tebay and K/Stephen I would think Lance ! That bloke used to only run Volvos IIRC,obviously he has seen some sense only if it’s running an old knacker Scania,I wonder what reg it is,I’d soon tell you wether it was an ex Bewick or a WRM !
Cheers Bewick.
Got the reg number at last.
G497 DKC.

How’s this shot for you “Shads” one of our single ram tippers,I fitted them with 16HP Briggs and Stratton hydraulic packs IIRC this one was a Crane Fruehauf chassis and a Homalloy body.
