I was also treated to a home grown single axle tipper with a Ford 8 engine. Starting it involved taking a six volt battery off the tractor unit. Once on full chat you had to tip the body in one quick motion or the engine would overheat. The fitters thought there was no need for any cooling system!
But most of my donkey engines were Listers. Shot of Aerostart in the winter and they were more reliable than any other type.
Then we got PTO-driven pumps- LUXURY at last!

I thought they just would have had those hand crank tipping gears when you were driving ROF. Bewick.
Nobody’s got any respect for the elderly these days.
You didn’t have to get up at three in the morning to light a fire in that Ford D-series. You young lads don’t know what proper lorry driving was all about.
Deisel engines, cabs, windscreens? Spoilt rotten if you ask me.
The first tipping trailer my old man had was a Neville which tipped up on the back wheels, it too had a Briggs and Stratton donkey engine on it. He replaced that trailer with a Crane Fruehauf but still had the donkey engine. The Briggs and Stratton died and a Lister diesel replaced it, he still had that until I drove for him years later. I then bought my own F12 and Crane trailer with tipping gear on the unit, not long after we were both tipping together and after seeing how much faster mine was the donkey engine was scrapped and PTO was fitted to his wagons. Must say I hated donkey engines, too slow and to have a driver stood next to the trailer was very dangerous if it started to lean

Putting F12 VOLVO badges on your new fh does not make it look any better you cant beat the REAL thing

The F 12 looks a lot better than the FH’s I must say I have always loved the F12 cab, the twin headlight series was better than the later single headlight one ( F12 400 ) like I bought new was never as good looking as my first F12 ( TVT 931X
It just shows the difference you can see over here in Adelaide, today I saw 2 F7 8 wheelers still working on the road and a brand new FH Volvo straight out of the paint shop, by the way there are still a few F12 and the odd 141 still earning a living.
T`was on the morning after the Steel Boys attended the Classic Commercial Show at Gaydon ,…when the
peace and tranquillity was suddenly shattered by this chap singing :… " I like a nice cup of tea in the morning… ".

Arthur Pooley’s ex F86 rusting in peace. I remember this wagon being delivered to N.L.Walling on Shay Lane Longridge when new. I took the body and flat off his old F86 and fitted it on this one, then it went for painting before being put on the road. Took these photos today for Cattlewagon man while drinking a cup of tea. Can you identify these cattlewagon bodies Roy? I know Pooleys was an ex Houghton 3 decker.

As you correctly stated , the Volvo had a 273 deck
P-Line` Houghton-Parkhouse body.
The second container is another H-P., but of the earlier design and construction, i.e. - no plastic H- section
between the steel framework
and the lower edge of the alloy panel.
The third container ( blue one ) is ,…I think,…made by a company called Newark , and possibly from the same named town.
Thanks for the pics. The Volvo brings back memories of 30 -odd years back.
Phew ,…after all that , I reckon I now need a large mug of…TEA !!

He passed away a few years ago a real nice chap
