Face up to the facts, it’s a way for dumb white guys to make a living. How many times have you peed in a lay by, eaten the the most disgusting food and gone to work at silly o clock. Why would women, or any other section of society get involved in transport.
Yep done silly o’clock starts & finishes done the self catering though but did work in catering before moving into transport
Yeah, used to do chains and pullers too. That’s why I kept a bit of scaffold pole on the truck (and for checking wheel nuts).Have to admit that sometimes meant hanging on the lever with my full bodyweight to get it one last link… and once it slipped through and I went flying through the air landing perilously near to the fork lift (my head missed it by about an inch) and nearly knocking the forklift driver out with the bit of scaffold pole.
Trying to get your knots undone when the ropes were frozen wasn’t so easy. Also hard to fold the sheet back when frozen stiff.
Re back doors: I used to keep a box in the cab when I had a curtainsider or box, as otherwise I often couldn’t reach high enough to get the leverage.
For a long time I didn’t use gloves either because I couldn’t find any to fit.
You’ve got it a lot easier these days, I’m sure!
When i am parked at a rdc waiting to tip if their are any lady truck drivers there i allways ask them if they use trucknet . The reply is nearly allways the same . Whats that .If you want to get more ladies onto the site we/ you need to spread the word.
I no Im writing this a bit late but as a newly qualified ‘LadyTrucker’ (which I would happily accept to be called) Im finding it difficult to get into the industry. I have spent many years in the Traffic Office until redundancy forced me out, then spent an incredible amount of money getting to this stage, having Class 1 licence, Hiab and ADR. (no i dont want praise - just a job)
Last week I spent 3 days knocking doors and phoning in Felixstowe (although I live a good 4 hour drive from there) just in the hope of finding work. I have travelled north south east and west and even agencies cant find me anything. Im under no illusion that times are hard in this industry and with insurance premiums at an all time high companies can ill-afford to take new drivers on. So for now this ‘Ladytrucker’ will carry on trying to get in somewhere, and then hopefully I can add another female face to the road. Stay safe all ■■
I would say that if a lady wants to work in transport they are better suited to buses or coaches. The work is cleaner and the load mostly loads and unloads itself. No roping or sheeting involved.

If you’re prepared to look for work four hours away from where you live, I’m really surprised you haven’t found anything!
If you contact Contract Personnel in Norwich a call, I am almost certain they will take you on and give you plenty of work. I know for a fact they have several Lady Truckers who get plenty of agency work from Bartrums and other places around East Anglia.
You’ll have to use Google to get the number, but I’m constantly surprised when I hear that people, male or female, can’t get work. If you have the licence/qualification, want to work and are an asset rather than a liability, there’s driving work out there.
(But then, I’ve heard some horror stories about some of the things, some agency drivers get up to…)
I have been called Ladytrucker679 since my first driving job, it was an easy discription and my payroll number it does not bother me. I am treated like a driver first and foremost and given tags like Burnout and Oldboy, I think I got off lightly the fact that I am a minority raises curious questions but that is only natural. Drivers are drivers but people too, all different and I prefer it that way but Im sorry if my name affends anyone.
I have hated the term Lady Trucker for many years and it all stemmed from the early formative days of the Ladies Truckers Club.
There were very few of us about then and all they wanted to do was for us all to join together and make the job ‘different’ just for us, instead of us adapting to the job as it was.
I was asked to report any Cafe’s that couldn’t provide ladies showers…18 years ago …they then wanted to name and shame these very small, but nevertheless, very good establishments, who are now incidentally long gone.
I quickly realised that their aims for ‘Lady Truckers’ was a million miles from what I wanted to do and whenever I hear that term I think back to the militant days of that club and lots more of their policies
So, I’ll say it again
The term Lady Trucker does NOT offend me…just don’t call me one Hope that’s sorted Pat
My choice is to be a truck driver,i would suppose that a lot of women dont wont to be a truck driver?,then again isnt it about time more men became midwives ■■ its got to be a matter of choice ! theres nowt wrong with split [ZB] truck drivers !!!

Wow you smooth talking rascal bet 9 out of10 say " oh sorry must dash, I think thats my phone!!!"
i knew that lady trucker theme would get a roasting.
there is not enough women involved in transport full stop.
the industry has never been very inviting towards lots of different groups, there isn’t enough asians or blacks too, once again this is down to the industry bigots, fortunately though todays society is more relaxed towards minority groups be they women, gays or pensioners it makes no difference to most.
i have always felt that it is skill and attitude that needs to be looked at not where the ■■■ organs are or what the skin pigment is.
■■■ or colour does not make a good driver or a bad one, my mum always used to tell me that there is good and bad in everyone and i have tried not to be prejudiced in my view of people.
more truck drivers are needed and i don’t care if they are green with purple stripes as long as they want to be professionals and come with a professional outlook to the job and the industry, it’s good drivers we need not nutbars and whingers.
we need to make sure they come at a steady rate so as not to cause an abundance of drivers to trucks ratio so wages can remain upwards spiralling instead of the other way.
we have had too many years in the 1990’s where an abundance of drivers has caused transport operators to undercut other operators to get work at the expense of the drivers, we must not let this happen again, it was bad for the industry then and would be worse for it now.
more drivers yes, any race any religion and any gender welcome.
Ladies are just as good as men (if not better). For Example, today i had a tanker in a skelly and didnt know how to use it, whe a big scannie came up next to me and a petite lady got out and said ‘‘you ok love?’’ i said no and explained the problem she then showed me how to do it… I was not embarrassed or anything. it was just one trucker helping another one out.
Well, having been in transport for a couple of years (yeah, I am a newbie, I know), it’s hard to be a “lady” in this game. Female, certainly, lady? nope.
We’re just as tough as the men, we do the same job, cope with the same horrors, and get the same lousy rates of pay. We’re truckers, and the best breed of human being on the planet. Colour, gender, orientation are all irrelivent. Truck drivers first and only.
Oh, and I can turn in a darn good whinge when I want to… Like telling the office not to send me out this sunday or else, since I’d just done a 71 hour week straight after coming off sick, and was dead on my feet and needed that weekend. Got accused of whinging then, and they were right. But I was back at work 8am today, and still raring to go 11 hours later when they told me I had no more work until 9am the next morning. Drove home in my car disappointed. I’ll be back, and working tomorrow, and the next day, and the next. They know I’ll go anywhere, pick up anything that’ll fit legally in the back. I have the same dedication as many of you men have. The fact I’m a woman is irrelivent on the road, it’s the fact it’s an 18 tonner next to you doing 90k flat out, and driven by someone who can drive it right. Does it matter who or what they are?
I’d drive a truck for fun. I have one of the best jobs in the world, doing something I love, and getting paid for it. Who wants more in life?
