As expected, I totally agree with Lucy.
Iâm a lorry driver, not a lady trucker.
I didnât want to be involved with the original Lady Truckers Club 30 years ago started by Illona ( Richards?)and my views havenât changed after working alonside blokes since then, but all the best to those who see themselves as âdifferentâ
Pat
As I understand the original is still going & still run by Deaneka
Yes Animal is right the Lady Truckers Club is still going strong. It was started by Illona many years ago and when she gave it up I took it over and have been at the helm now for many years. The LTC is basically a friendship club for women in haulage ,that was the original concept in the early days when it was a safety net for the girls when needing safe parking up facilities etc. now of course times have changed and parking is a lot easier to find There are still some male drivers that think the jobs are just for men, well come on guys wake up and smell the coffee the girls driving artics etc are here to stay and we do mingle and hold respect , only last weekend I was at a get together with a group of drivers and their families and we all had a great time and I felt very at home with the guys. The days of the women staying home tied to the sink has long gone some of us had to make a living and its not a bad way to earn a crust

Shame that you feel the need to start your own âclubâ just for women!
Didnât you have the racism and inclusiveness training modules at your place.
Integrate⌠donât be sectarian.
Unbelievable that in this day and age people, especially women, would start a club with that sort of title. That is not doing drivers who happen to be female any favours at all

You are aware when you word things like that and the title of the club and descrition you do make it harder for your self to fit in. Believe it or not if a women goes to work pull equal weight and doesnât make a big song and dance about it and proving them selfâs etc not alot of people notice or care sheâs a women they all just get on with it.

This is a reply from Wendy, who asked me to post it for her. Liz (aka scanialady)
Where clubs are concerned I do feel that many people enjoy what is on offer from various clubs of different sorts and if people get enjoyment from being members then I certainly see no harm in them, and also see no harm in any club being gender specific. (No woman has been allowed to join the Masons for example but there is no outcry about that) There is a difference in many cases between what men and women enjoy - for example magazines. Nobody worries about âWomanâs Ownâ magazine being aimed specifically at women although I am sure many men enjoy reading it as by the same rule many women â including myself â enjoy reading Custom Car magazine which is probably aimed mainly at men.
I have never personally been a great one for joining clubs although I do spend a lot of time helping out with clubs of varying sorts. I was asked to produce a bi monthly magazine for this new Lady Truck Drivers UK club and have been more than willing to do so.
I can understand that being a member of a club is not for everyone â and thatâs fine. As for female truck drivers clubs they too wonât be for everyone - but as Danneke has already pointed out, the original âLady Truckers Clubâ has been around for many years and is still going strong, so obviously still has many members who are enjoying being a part of the club. As the new âLady Truck Drivers UKâ also has been approached by many female drivers wishing to join â and was in fact formed because many women drivers had asked for a new club with particular benefits in mind such as cheap car insurance for members - then that also answers the query that there is plenty of room for more than one club aimed specifically at women who work in the haulage industry and as the two clubs offer different benefits for their members then yes â there is plenty of room for these two - and possibly more clubs of this ilk.
I can also see Pats point of view that in her opinion being a member of such a club would make some women feel that they were being set aside as different - Nobody is twisting arms for memberships. After spending over 20 odd years behind the wheel myself I did the job no differently from any of my male colleagues, gender had nothing to do with ability to do the job properly - but I never wanted to be treated like a man and always enjoyed being a lady regardless of the fact that I spent all day in a truck. But if others prefer to âblend inâ more thatâs also fine by me.
I would also like to point out that despite the fact that I enjoy being a lady I canât remember a time when I felt the urge to âdrive with my â â â â outâ and certainly canât remember any of the other female drivers doing so at the time - so although I was tempted to totally ignore that rather childish and narrow minded remark I thought it worth noting.

Funny, put an intelligent post on and no-one bothers to answer it. Thanks Wendy for the great job you are doing with the magazines.
What do you expectâŚ? We were all having fun and now it feels like weâve been told off by the Headmistress and told to stop being naughty boys. Especially if we canât talk about chesticles!!
I never wanted to be treated like a lady when I was at work, but I did think I deserved to be treated like a lorry driver, whether bad or good.
Part of the resentment I feel, and I suspect Lucy does too, is that we both have worked long and hard over the years to get rid of the lady/female tag and have both taken pride in just being a lorry driver.
In our quest to do that weâve both, although not intentionally, made it easier for other females to be taken seriously and treated as one of the lads, which after all is the greatest compliment any of us can have.
Iâm sorry but no wonder men dont âtake lady/female/women etcâ truck drivers seriously when they read a post like bloodoodleâs 6 April 8.07am
quoting ânever wanted to be treated like a ladyâ then goes on to say âpart of the resentmentâ is that she amongst others have worked hard over the years to get rid of the lady/female tag. and finally âmade it easier for females to be taken seriouslyâ.
good god. We are women, biologically, visually, vocally!!
Im sure if we didnt all come across as raving feminists, we would actually gain respect for just doing our jobs. I like to be treated as a lady, much the same as i respect and treat men like gentlemen.
Part of the problem is men read posts like yours, and roll their eyes ( i know i did)
Also they dont know how to treat us, as good god they cant treat us like ladies ( leaves us pretty much unapproachable)
Why get rid of the female tag, in a RDC eg the girl in the seat drinking coffee is guess what âthe girlâ .
As for being treated as"one of the lads" being greatest compliment of all !! reallyâŚthats when we know we have made it.
No thanks. I will settle for just being treated well.
Guess how we do that. We treat men well. Thought I am not sure if they will respond well to that âtagâ
Not a personal attack, apologies if it is perceived as such. Just i think ladies are too sensitive. I get on with the job and am respected for that âŚbonusâŚtreated like a ladyâŚbonus.

Thatâs because, with the above post, you have basically polarised all the men (and possibly some of the ladies/females/women/girls - see I donât even know what Iâm ALLOWED to call you now!)
WTG for inclusion
The thing is, iâve always thought, if you can do the job, then great no problem. Who cares if you have your bumps in a different place? Iâve seen plenty of women truck drivers pull into a yard/rdc and pull off a perfect reverse or whatever while some of the fellas who 20 seconds previously had been saying âHere we go, watch this.â Yes, there no doubt are some blokes around who still resent the presence of women in this job, but I think theyâre in a minority now.
As for the ââ â â â outâ comment near the top of this thread, while it nearly had me on the floor laughing at the political incorrectness of it, it shows that as a bunch of people, we have the ability to take the â â â â out of most things. I may be wrong but I donât think the comment had any other purpose other than to have a laugh.
Iâve worked in a mainly female environment before and I can promise you that some of the comments I used to hear would make some of the â â â â taking remarks in this thread sound very tame, but I never took any offence to being the â â â â of any of their jokes cos I took it in the manner it was intended.
I think its fair enough to start a club exclusively for lady truckers, but as has been pointed out, it doesnât exactly help with integration, in fact it encourages segregation, but hey, each to their own and it certainly doesnât worry me in any way.
Now, howâs about instead of the Lady truckers club BBQ at Truckfest, a wet T-shirt competition instead?
