When looking at ta trailer, how do you know how long it is… is it s 44’ or 40’ etc… is there any tell, tell clues to look for?

Ask a girl
get someone to put 20 pallets on it, if theres room for 2 more, its a 44
Generally a 40’ trailer will end at the back of the rearmost axle. A 45’ trailer will have a 5’ over hang. The wheelbases will be the same for both, just a few extra feet of chassis on the 45’.
Here’s a picture of a 40ft and a 45ft trailer side by side. It’s not a very clear pic as far as the 40 footer goes, but maybe will give you some idea as to what I mean.

I was told you could get 26 blue pallets on a 44?

You can if you’ve got them turned round the right way!

So the trailer on the right… is 5 foot longer than the one on the left ?
OK
If thats the case then I’ve got enough space to get the tattoo that says ‘‘welcome to Barbados, have a nice day’’…
See how many remember THAT joke

true enough, i forgot about that, the aussie ones i carry are a bit different, same size but theyre all facing exactly the same way cos theyve only got slots on 2 sides rather than 4 for side load/unloading

Yes the trailer on the right is 5ft longer than the one on the left, they just aint parked neck and neck. The idea was to look at the bit behind the rear wheels, or not, as is the case of the 40footer.
Is it me?
when i was a kid and played cb ers i used to see Ferrymasters trailers with a sticker long and high
which meant 13.6 metres long and 4.0 metres tall but with 3 metre load height
that was 20 year ago so where do people who dont pull boxes get this notion of trailers being 40 foot or 44 or 45
and whats mpg got to do with truck economy
more important to know the height and depth of the pin

Not so sure that height is more important than length. I would have thought they be equally important. Some of my loads can be less than 12 inches in height, but its the length of the trailer bed which determines which of our trailers are sent for particular loads.
As for the measurement used being in feet rather than metres, thats because its how it was asked in the original question. And also because I’m an old ■■■■ who had been dealing with trailers since pre-decimal days. I know the length in both metres and feet, but prefer to use the latter.
Oh, and there was me thinking that boxes came in 20, 40 and 45 feet lengths.

When I was a kid, 33’ tandems were the norm until them pesky foreigners started sending their longer trailers over, they had no lights and automatic landing legs.
If you go to collect a container from Felixstowe or Hull it will be 6,9 or 12 metres. If you collect it from any other port or railhead in Europe it will be a 20, 30 or 40 footer
I still measure in old money and count in ten bob bits

North Sea Ferries have always used metric for lift bookings, so have EWS.
The point was if you listen to a Dutch or German driver his native tongue will be broken with 40 foot or 20 foot
