Knees are shot!

Have realised that having driven an auto for the last 10 years and changing to a job with a manual gearbox is playing havoc with my knees! Has anyone else found this? The in and out of the cab more times a day isn’t helping either. Now thinking I should have taken the container job!!

I’m young and still have plenty off life left in mine  but just an idea I snapped my ankle 10 years ago playing football and when it’s hot it swells and gives me hassle and wearing a strap support on it helps I know you can get them for knees to so may help you.

Exercise dear boy, no seriously.

I suffer with me knees too (worn out like most of us) but the Osteo put me right how to exercise the legs properly whilst he was sorting me back out years ago, it works.

Might be worth joining a gym and getting some proper advice, getting back in shape makes you feel a hell of a lot better all over.

How has changing to a manual after 10yrs affected your knee’s?

All that’s different is a clutch pedal operated by your left foot. Or has your right knee ‘come out’ in sympathy?

you’ll be allright when ya build the muscle back up,every day your left leg will get stronger,if you’ve ever broken a limb you’ll know what i mean  i did mine in skirlington pulling plugs  and when the pot came off my calf muscle was thinner than my arm till i started using it again.

Jesus wept! Get an office job. Walking must be an absolute nightmare for you!

The top of my knee and inside of my right thigh has started giving me grief recently. Probably down to me carrying 3x16kg flour bags at a time on my right shoulder upstairs on Monday.

Firstly I don’t remember driving any trucks where use of the clutch didn’t mean lifting the whole foot from the floor using the lower leg and the knee joint to account for the angle between the upper leg and lower leg.Because of the length of clutch pedal travel makes it act through a long arc.So unless something has changed there’s no reason to think that isn’t still the case.

While even a short travel car type clutch pedal still usually requires some movement of the knee because of the ‘design flaw’ in the foot  which puts the heel, which acts as a fulcrum, behind the ankle pivot point, thereby causing the knee to have to bend to make allowance for the difference when the ankle lifts the lower leg on engagement or when depressing the clutch pedal to release it.

Although having said that there’s some car type clutches with a long enough travel to require the foot to be lifted from the floor completely to engage it just like a truck.

In which case if both knees are knackered that obviously means the left one which operates the clutch. However if someone thinks that worn out knees are a problem they should try driving a manual car with a gout attack in the left knee that’s otherwise fine. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

Don’t park so near to the toilets and walk a little. You would be surprised at how little/much we walk when you look at it all

A lot of younger drivers jump down from the cab or catwalk instead of turning round and climbing down. They’ll pay for that later in life.

Stopped jumping out when I did some work for Next and they jump on you for not using 3 points of contact getting in and out. Don’t think the knees are entirely down to driving, think the climbing around and lying under cars to get them winched on may not be helping!!

Having been a sparky for many years, my left knee is knackered, but weirdly my right is fine - although I usually tend(ed) to put the weight on the right knee when scrabbling about in lofts etc. I find that some days it will be fine, then others it will just give way under me without any warning, usually when there’s a big audience and I just crumple to the floor.

Checked with the doc, and got told its old age (44!) and that I’d probably need an operation in due course, but not yet…

If you do try exercise, don’t start running on the treadmill if you have bad knees. Running or any type of “high impact” activity is bad for the knees. Try cycling or rowing.

(My dads partner is a knee specialist).

Glucosamine/Cod liver oil tabs.

Massage your knees and has been said gentle exercise.

You can’t tell 'em, he’ll have to learn the hard way.

I slipped off a Scammell step ring 30 years ago only a couple of feet drop but unprepared, right foot landed on edge of kerb ankle gave way and i ended up in a crumpled heap in agony.
Ankle turned black and blue for several weeks, ever since then i’ve had to wear good lace up boots not shoes as that ankle is weak and prone to flipping if i catch it wrong.

Ya can’t educate ■■■■, we see ■■■■ driving on our roads all day long, was gonna say, getting a magnum would soon get some one out of the habit of jumpin out the cab, but obviously not!

After driving a man with comfort shift ( button on the gear stick for the clutch ) for 2 years, I then changed jobs and got a manual scania, I’m not overweight or unfit, but it took me a week or 2 before my leg stopped aching.
