Keys

Got someone telling me today that he once locked his keys in the cab after exiting to do his coupling procedure. This got me thinking about other reasons why its good practice to take the keys out?

Any ideas I can pass on please?

Volvos are notorious for this, and have been for at least 15 years to my knowledge. It is a design fault and they should have corrected it by now. Scanias used to do it too and the workaround used to be to short out one of the wires behind the quarter panel using a pin and a length of wire, I don’t think this is possible on Volvos.

Our new 66plate FH are always good for locking the doors with the keys in lol, specially with idle cut out turns itself off then if your not quick enough locks itself Grrr

Our 66 plate Dafs have been locking themselves as well.

I managed to lock myself out in Rungis market once at 2am. -3c and I was in a t shirt, plus my gas bottle was on and kettle boiling inside! I ended up ripping the side locker open and squeezing up into cab!

It stops someone jumping in the cab and driving off whilst you’re on the catwalk.

Had an XF…

Lock me out when it was tipping it down with rain. I pulled up to tip at this place in Manchester, got out to speak to security and closed the door behind me. When I went back it was locked, engine running, wipers and electric mirrors on. DAF came out about an hour later and drilled the passenger lock. The fitter said it wasn’t the first one he’d done like that.

If anyone drove away whilst I was on the catwalk, the red line would be coming off.

 once you got the side locker open how’d you access the cab? Is the top bit of the locker formed by the bunk? Sounds like the work of Houdini, good moves

if your on the same truck constantly…get a key cut then stick it somewhere with a big blob of silicone then you can always get in if it locks you out…just hide it behind the grill etc and spray it black…takes 2 mins and always available.it dont need to be the master type key…just a blank that will open the door.

old trick - if you have a cb aerial unscrew it and bend it to shape so you can put it threw the window (if open ) and either open the window or (if your in a volvo) hit the switch on the door to open the doors

Lock me out

Had one that did the same to me, kept the spare key on the trailer in the tool box after that.

Not always a good idea to remove them, mine nearly disappeared down a drain a couple of nights back.

But could you squeeze through that same gap now though

I got locked out a Renault once and ever since then I leave the window open a bit so I’d still be able to get in .

I got locked out of a FH on my first day at a new job a few years back, luckily I had left the sunroof open so managed to get back in through there, never been so pleased that I’m not a fatty  also got locked out of a MAN at another job,had jumped out to have a quick look at a site layout and left the door open (to prevent a repeat of the FH incident) but the helpful gate man shut the door for me whilst I was asking the machine driver where he wanted me and the bloody thing locked itself with the engine running and the lights on  after a couple of phone calls I was told a way of getting back in without causing any damage by shorting something out under the grill :sunglasses: I was not very popular for the hour it took me to get back in though as I was blocking the only gate on the site  lesson learned,if I get out the cab for anything, the keys come with me

Happened to me once, and luckily in the yard. Another driver called an operator to come down the yard and get the spares out of the office. I always drop the window when I get out and leave the keys in

On an open cast site nr ■■■■■■■ Ayrshire on Saturday lunchtime loadin a hydraulic ram
It was snowing so left the engine running heater full blast, got loade chained up, hands were like ice and the doors had locked, nearest MAN dealer nr Glasgow, boss said to me if anyone can open it I’ll pay £80 one of the fitters got the cherry picker forced the sky light up and there was a switch nr the bunk for the windows long bar down and pressed switch
Carried a key in my pocket for months after

Yes, luckily nothing was on the bunk
