Rang the farmer,he is out for the day,he asks if i can drive a tractor to get my pallets off,i say i was born on a dairy farm,i get to the farm, and can not get the thing in gear but can work the forks on the front, the last tractor i drove was a Ford TW 10,Massey Ferguson T2O,and a Fordson Major, that was in 1983,this thing was modern with about 20 sticks, knobs, gears and no instructions in the cab.
Imagine the super markets RDC`s saying the fork lift is over there, tip your own truck, farms are isolated places, and no neighbours for miles around,if i came a cropper who would know.
I knew a farmer that forgot to apply the hand brake, the tractor rolled away and he was spiked to death with the forks on the front against the silage clamp,a passer by thought it was odd that the tractor was in the same position as he would normaly be finished by that time in the day,and summoned help.
When I worked for Blake’s in the 90s there were several customers who expected us to drive the forklift and unload ourselves. I also drove for Ferryfast delivering to Markets. Some of the wholesalers had lockups and we would open the shutter, get the FLT out, tip ourselves and put it all away.
All in a day’s work then.
We have to tip ourselves in a lot of depos we go to. But there is always a que for the FLt
What if u dont have a FLT License.
Just get on with it i’ve driven fork trucks for years without one
I’ve driven a tractor to tip myself as well once as well, great fun, loved it.
Ive driven a forklift for years without even a license.
I honestly believe that if everywhere I went, if I could just jump on a forklift and tip myself I would cut my working day by about 3 hours.
There are some really really slow shocking forklift drivers out there and it’s so frustrating.
There’s not many farmers that will trust us drivers with their modern machinery nowadays. I’ve been driving tractors and forklifts since I was 11 (26 now) and they still aren’t keen to let me put a load of grain on myself.

You just carry on and tip yourself anyway.
You do even get the odd farmer that will ask you to load yourself if they’re busy and you can drive a teleporter but these days the kit tends to be worth so much that it’s not worth the risk to them. I’ve loaded myself a couple of times in the last couple of years though…

Did you get your teleporter licence from the starship enterprise?
Not quite in the same league
i have too load or unload myself at least twice a week as quite a few of the farmers we work for also have a full time job so it saves them either having too come home or get someone else too do it. i dont mind doing it and it keeps my hand in with the modern machinery.

I had to endure one of those abortions at the Citb college years ago to get my telehandler license. Took my test on a modern Cat one, those Sandersons are utter junk. I place them with Moxy dumptrucks, JCBs and Halla plant in the same league.

Just out of interest you back up & run over the farmers kid, & they ask to see your licence, or you take chunk out of the farmers house/barn who’s paying when/if your uninsured ?
Farmerboy will be first after your wallet if it goes t@ts up

Or they ask you but after the accident, cover their arse with “I never told you to do it…”
I quite happily load myself with a 360 but I wont “just dig a footing” incase I hit a cable or gas main that doesn’t show up on the plans.

That’s the chance the farmer takes, at the end of the day it’s his land, his private property so if he allows you to drive his machines that’s the chance he takes.

Me - not as bad as it looks . 5 minutes with someone who can and you will pick up the rest yourself.
In the blame & claim society we live in who do you think is going to pay your wages when you injure yourself by using equipment you don’t know how to & have never been shown !
