Hello Truckers. Watch out, young newly passed class 1 driver will be sharing the road with you soon. Dun dun dunnnn
Went through apex training centre in Peterborough, great bunch of guys.
Been in talks with Turners (soham) at their bicker depot, and I’m booked in for an assessment on 3rd Jan. I’ve heard all the rumours, Polish peanuts, tret like ■■■■, trucks not looked after, long waiting times getting unloaded, etc etc, but being under 25 with no experience means I have to take what I can get just to get my experience under me belt.
If anyone is from spalding or roundabout this area, can anyone recommend firms that would be worth looking into for better pay and conditions when I’ve reached the ripe age of 25 and have 2+ years artic driving experience.■■?
Congratulations, unfortunately you cannot be too choosy to begin with and if Turners offer you a job then I’d take it at least you’ll gain valuable experience and maybe after 6 months or so try elsewhere but until then just grin and bear it !!

Take care and Merry Christmas to you all.
Congratulations!
Gist pays the best hourly rate round Spalding but Fowler Welch has a better overtime rate if you work the hours and the weekends. I have heard Fowlers are getting “flexible” over the 2 years so might be worth enquiring sooner if you get some experience.
Got a Stobarts? Go for them. They’ll chew you up, spit you out and if you’re still alive after the first week you’ll feel like a ■■■■■■ tyrannosaurus, just like me.
Seriously, if you can get eased in then go for it but I suspect they want your blood from day 1. Just try to stay out of trouble.

Yeh wouldn’t mind going with steady Eddie but Newark is their closest depot and that’s quite a drive from spalding there and back. Be alright if I were trunking but that wouldn’t work for me having a young daughter, I’m a family man first so standard day shift will do me for now. And I’ve got an array of haulage firms in spitting distance from home so, just got to pick the right one, whichever that is lol
Congrats on your pass mate, and as Bald Bloke says; take what’s on offer when you have no experience!
Couple that with it coming to the slackest part of the year just after Xmas, so I wouldn’t be too picky if I was you as otherwise you could end up with nothing. And in your position getting expereince is everything…

I have a reputation for getting in a pickle
What could possibly go wrong?
Stay tuned to find out
(but seriously I know trucking is serious business and you can easily hurt/kill others around you if you ain’t switched on, my pickle moments are not usually on the road, however, I have a novelty gift, a reg plate with “pickles” on it, so if you see a turners artic tootling around with “pickles” in the windscreen, that’s me lol)
Well best of luck mate and hope it all goes well. Just take your time, assess the situations as they arise and don’t let yourself get in a panic, as that’s when things tend to go pear shaped…
P. S. So by naming your firm you do know you’ve just basically signed up to the company’s social media policy? So from now on think twice before you post and what you say mate…

Boll**ks. See why I’m called pickles now lol.
But thanks, no doubt they’ll give me a bit of training before setting me loose so, I’ll listen in, and like you say, allow myself to assess the situation, don’t panic… I gotcha…

Thanks… At this rate I’m gonna be turning up to rdc’s or wherever and drivers will take a glance at the next truck arriving who’s gonna be sharing hours worth of time waiting time with, and they all gonna be running away, hiding in waiting rooms or pretending to be asleep in their cabs… It’s OK guys I’m not a carryfast, I am a person you can safely approach without regret lol

You’re right mate, all gotta start somewhere. Firms round this area want a minimum of 2 years continuous experience though, will have to stay put and slog it out for at least 2 years to make most doors available to open, with 6 months I’ll be open to most agencies, but I’ve never had a positive experience with agencies and if I can get away with avoiding them forever more, I will. Despite all the warnings I’ve received turners might not end up being that bad, soon find out though, standby lol

Thanks for heads up, I’ve had a few other people say gist are the best paying in spalding too, also heard they want your flesh for pound, i’m not afraid of hard work though so bit of graft doesn’t put me off whilst I’m still in me 20’s, I just want to make sure that if I’m going to leave a big company that’s been good enough to take me on with no experience, at an age that 90% of haulage insurers won’t accept, been good enough to train me, that I leave them for a company that I won’t regret getting with. I’m in spalding, the turners depot im going for is in bicker, that’s about 20-30 mins drive depending on traffic for okish pay, but you obv know spalding enough to know it has gist, fowlers, freshlinc, Robsons, garn, midas, etc etc, there’s an abundance of firms to choose from, right on my doorstep almost, and if I can get to work in 2-5mins drive with an increase in take home pay, then I want in… Im leaning towards gist but I’m not dead cert. Well I spose I better work on actually securing a job first though eh.
