Perish the thought…
I suspect that it might be a case of ‘orange and white, stop on sight’ now.
How long will it be before production grinds to a halt at Leyland and Basildon?
If I was plod/DVSA, I’d be waiting at the factory gates.

I wonder what the pay is like compared to, say, curtainsider work? it looks like there’s room for a small bloke and his toothbrush but not much else in the cabin
I know it probably won’t go down well on here but I wish there were a lot more like Jan de Rooy! We’ve all got too mamby pamby and PC with all this EU law bollox, fearing the consequences of falling foul of totally OTT tacho rules. He’s well known for working his drivers hard and himself even harder so the workshy need not apply! Apparantly when DAF launched the 95 and announced that the new truck would be ok to drive for 10 hours, he shouted from the audience, What? Only 10 hours■■? Good man!

you talk about OTT tacho rules, the only thing OTT about them is the fact that they allow a driver to be at work for up to 15 hrs, then travel home, eat, shower, shave etc., time to relax is none existent then travel back to work all within 9hrs and repeat again and then again
then after 3 days on the 4th 5th and 6th only have to do 13 long hours!!! in no other workplace would people be expected do these hours
So I agree the tacho rules are OTT

Well it ain’t going to change any time soon. Look on the brightside your paid by the hr. Or get on furniture retail once down the road its 8 till 7 at the very latest. Unless your running back its usually 13 hrs off or more
Bloke i used to work for used to do alot of the tractors out of Basildon as thats where we were based. We had 2-6 trucks in there daily doing mainly Purfleets and Southampton, on average 3 tractors per load on a 45ft flatbed trailer. Then 1 day De Rooy turn up and start “doing a bit” we were told they were doing the odd UK delivery but would mainly be doing the exports to Europe. Surprise, surprise they started doing the very odd UK trip, then it became abit more regular and well i’m sure you can guess the rest, my old boss lost the work he just couldn’t compete with De Rooy rates and the fact that sometimes they could squeeze 4 tractors on a drawbar over our 3 maximum on the flats.
All the trucks were on Polish plates and some of the lads were decent enough blokes. Most said they were “well” overworked but the money they got was much better than they’d get at home so who can blame them. They had to do 6 weeks away from home at a time in some really poxy old crap, small cabbed trucks but they were only in it for the money. They got a Dutch bloke in to run the office there, right horrible prick, spoke to his drivers like dirt but i just think they were used to it, i certainly wouldn’t have put up with the ■■■■■■■■ for long, but i guess if they were earning the money they wanted they just put up with him. Their trucks always seemed to have 1 defect or another and some of the driving standards were a bit questionable, so i’m not surprised at the original post, if i’m honest i’m surprised its taken this long.

i t will never change while ever there are blokes like the two of you in the industry. Too stupid to realise that what we need are less hrs for more money, not more hours for less money. When I started in this job, there were no tacho laws, we were on log books, max twelve and a half hours per day, so eleven and half hrs off per day, and pound for pound we were better off then
Really Im lucky to do 50hrs a week
Its not drivers that need to change it its companies and planners also receivers most day shifts are based around a 12 hr day. That’s what needed to make the truck pay untill hauliers stop trying to out price each other its not going to change
Sorry Alix, but I disagree mate. Drivers can change it, there are no young ones entering the industry due to poor wages and conditions now. If drivers already in the industry stopped working stupid hrs that even slaves centuries ago were not forced to work, then all employees would be forced to increase wages to get new blood in. This may mean that they in turn may have to increase haulage rates to customers but why change anything if drivers want more hours for less money rather than less hours for more money If anyone thinks being at work for 15hrs a day is good then what chance do we have of anything changing
In no other industry are people even expected to do such long hours let alone have someone pass a law and call it tacho regs and say its okay to do this

You are dead right. People who work in tesco stacking shelves don’t work crazy long hours. Nor do people in my local shell garage. They definitely don’t work 12 hours and more…
Oh wait.
I am willing to bet you any money that Tesco shelf stackers and filling station employees do not work 15 hrs a day

Please go to Tesco in Batford at 2345 tonight. Ask hisham what time he started today, it’s a fair bet that he was in at 0600.
Equally try Shell Chiswell Green. Ask a couple of the people in there with a grubby shirt on what time they started. Plenty there do 12-15 hour days.
I’m not saying it’s right. I just wish some people who whinged about long hours on here had some perspective. If you are in a low wages per hour job, chances are you work a lot of hours to make up a decent wage.

if you know people such as Hisham working 18hr days at Tesco then I concede to you f-reds. most people I know of in similar jobs all work low hours and get their money topped up with working tax credits which we as taxpayers pay. yes I agree there are plenty on low hourly rates but the ones I know of do not have to work excessive hours as the taxpayers make up their wages. But the haulage industry due to low wages for the responsibility and poor working conditions is short of new drivers entering and to cover this shortage, workers within the industry are expected to work long hours for the same low pay. only drivers will change the pay rates by working less hours and the pay will have to rise to attract new drivers
I have had several dealings with them and none have been in a positive way. It was only a couple of months ago that they were involved in the crash at M6 J16 that nearly killed the Tuffnells driver where a truck fell off a truck. A Daf Aid mechanic at a job said it was one of the worst maintained trucks he had ever seen and it was the second time in a week that he had dealt with it for different defects.

Agreed. It’s a waste of time talking to guys that would work 25 hr days if they were allowed. They think they are well paid because they only look at the bottom line of their payslip, blissfully ignoring the fact that they work nearly twice as many hours as most industries…and mostly for single time. But if you dare to point it out to them you are accused of being in the wrong job/if you don’t like it move/ nature of job etc. So it just continues, then you get bullcrap like wtd which could have went some way to improvement, but no along comes the poa cop out.
My misses works nights at are local tesco store 37.5 hrs a week shelf filling , starts at 10pm and she’s out the door at 6,30am , 2 x15 min and 1x30min break a night , Its just short of £10 per hour Monday-Friday and double time sat & sun ,

You are wasting your time posting something like that on here, where £650 in the bank for what in many other industries would be considered two weeks’ work is often considered something to be proud of.
Drivers hours are going to have to come down.
If you want a mortgage and to raise a family (and most young people do) then you need two incomes.
This means that both partners have to take their share of child-related duties…the days of Mummy staying at home to look after Janet and John while Daddy goes to work are long-gone.
And that means the days of Daddy being able to pull 15-hour shifts every week are over, too.
The road transport sector is still living in the 1950s, but the rest of the world has moved on. It has a choice: either cut drivers hours drastically and get them home most nights, or keep the hours as they are but start paying drivers stockbroker wages.
