hi martyn,
i can’t figure out who is driving that merc .c513 ywx was the last new merc.that was painted green, red and grey.cliff ashley had her new with his then nightman geoff hewson (r.i.p.),geoff ran her off the road into the ditch on the then newly opened ludlow bypass one night and re-arranged the front of the cab
the trailer in this shot, is,i think jm1,alun jones (joint’s boss) favourite coiler as she could weigh out a 29 tonne coil, legally at 38 tonne gross (with taff’s specialy adapted daf
).jm1 was lethal when empty,i used to turn the tap off on the yellow line with g800 pulling that, because the trailer footbrake would lock in an instant and frighten the life out of me,especially in the wet.tony,i am not offended one bit,by your creation of this thread
.i have dozens of joint’s albums (that,i thought people would be bored with) i will eventually get them scanned as autumn approaches
regards andrew.
The passage of time “blunts the memory”! a 29 ton coil at 38 ton gross? ULW of the tractor and trailer 9ton? can I put my socks and shoes back on? Was that trailer,by any chance,a JM special 12 wheel Tri-axle? The plot thickens I think! We had a 112/Task combination at Bewick Transport that could weigh out with 25 ton on pallets at 38 ton GVW but thats about 3ton heavier ulw than the JM outfit!! I think the weighbridge operator in the Abbey must have been in Joints “pocket” or the BSC scale printer was “up the creek”!!! and stop trying to blame the shunters for the sloppy sheeting! those guy’s were the salt of the earth and drivers would blame them if a sheet tie came loose 200 mile away!! Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
i promise you mate, that’s true.jm1 and jm92 and all the other tandem skelly’s joint’s had were very light.the triaxles were around 5 tonne.the special daf 1900 around 4 tonne, registered hyx 157w,an ex supermarket motor,as i recall.in all the years i can remember being in the abbey, nobody including joints ever had a 6 wheeler shunting unit
.yet they were still permitted to weigh off heavy tandem’s,usually at around 26 tonne payload.i do agree with you about the hard working shunters.
regards andrew
Now then Andrew,I think this Joints thread has the “legs” to be as interesting as the Guy 240LXB thread had! What was the 38 ton make and spec of this ex Supermarket unit? What happened at the other end when the outfit was weighed off in excess of 38tons and there happened to be a Trading Standards/ministry man in the weighbridge? and you were weighing in at 41tons +? bring me another large one Anne please I’m concentrating here!! Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
that daf,was not,to my knowledge ever a 38 tonner.she was an ex trolley at,i guess? 28 ton gross, bought from ken appleyard’s emporium on port talbot dock.the farcical,to me anyway, british steel shunting system was open to overloading abuse the site only tractor passed a simple in house test and would often be half the weight of the unit that tipped the loaded trailer
.with regard to tipping these loads, that could be a bit of an adventure, most of joint’s “heavies” would if they could? be tipped at night or weekends.i once weighed into llanwern at 44 tonne (38 gross) and the weighman did not see the amusing side of it
.you have to think,it was in technology terms a long time ago.the secret weighing pads on the motorways would have you now
or would they?cause the majority of coil now goes by rail
regards andrew.

hi martyn,
i would love to buy a g cab 1748 4x2,though i doubt i would be able to find one in the uk now
regards andrew.
Hi and Andrew glad you like the new thread. I know I was only there for 2 years but i enjoyed working for Joints. I know what you mean about the weights of the coils. When i was at Shephards of manchester ( Ardwick ) loading the scrap bails I had a Daf 2300 ex Tesco truck . Because it was so light i could get good on them for the Shrewsury and some of the welsh lads I had billy once and Kathy came up once and she had a flat tyre so I helped her fix it . Talking about Kathy she was a grat driver and was as good as ay of the men.Getting back too the Daf the only good thing about her was the good visability . She had no power at all. None of the Shrewsbury las wanted too take down to Port Talbot for a service !! I had the first lorry I worked with I forget the numer plate you will know . That was great in the scrap yard . You didn’t have too boot her at all . The Daf you did. Talking about tralier numbers etc I have 2 diaries 1994 and 1995 with all the trailers I had loaded at home. Any way enouge of me Joints was good for my dad too RIP he loved it there . He liked the night driving and got on well there . Joints was the longest he ever worked for I think it was 12 years. Yes it would be great too get another 1748 on the road if you did I would be pestering you for a ride back over the beacons and down too Port Talbot.Any way my fingers are aching lol. Take care . Tony

im sure you could get one somewhere in europe ill come with you to pick it up there are a few out there cheers martyn.
Hiya Andrew and all the ex Joints lads! Just wanted you to come clean and own up!!! I used to bring a 4 in-line out of Barrow Steel works on a Sunday morning quite often with the 22 ton of Signode strapping on for the Abbey which had been loaded by the night shunter and weighed out as if it was on the Octopus and trailer it didn’t half make the Comet groan!!,we then transhipped it in Brady’s yard. Now and again we also used to put an extra 5 ton on for Griffithstown works if there were no other motors going near. The bloke in the W/bridge at G/town used to make a fuss when we were weighing out at 32 ton (legal) after tipping their 5 ton!! “You and your Guvnors will get locked up if the Ministry catches you Boyos!!!” Never got caught!! You couldn’t run out of Neath MB or Velindre or Trostre overloaded even in the 60’s.Happy Days all the same!! Cheers you Welsh retrobates!!!Dennis.

hi dennis,
good story mate.especially the part about you weighing out legally after tipping five tonnes.the griffithstown works was one i remember very well,as my aunty and uncle lived right next to it.as you can imagine,it’s all gone now,i think walters group bought it?,when i visited my aunty last,i noticed there was a housing estate being built there.now when it comes to transhipped loads of steel,i immediatley think of cardiff transport, now they were awful naughty boys
,we used to load coil out of their shed (formerley wynns garage) in newport, mark? the charge hand, just couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t let him load two 15 tonners for pembroke dock onto joint’s coilers
when cardiff’s trampers and subbies came in,then you would see a full load of coil, surrounded by re-bar,palletised anything and bundles of wire coil all on one very heavy cardiff transport trailer, scotland bound
.
regards andrew.
Andrew,
this is that same yard now.
