Joint Motorways

Hi Tony /Mercman have you any pics of the Guys ? Is anybody using the Hanwood yard now? When i was last up that way it was a firm named Middle motors ; they had a Chinese 6 Atkinson tanker in their yard for several years along with Caddys european ERF unit . regards keith

Hi Keith hows things ? The only pictures of the drivers is of Cliff Ashely and Mick Glover on top of a steel coil that had fell of a trailer ! At that time there was adie RIP , Warick , Geoff Hewson , my dad Roger Gardiner RIP and a few others That was in 1994/5 The yard was owned by Peter Middle I know his son had a tipper lorry in Tarmac colours .I don’t know if the yard is being used now. My first lorry that I drove for Joints . It was a 1628 with a medium cab with 6 speed box that had like a spliter not a range change box .I have looked at lealets for the gear box and they said it was fitted with a range change Does any one was this an option ? Tony

hi tony,
the gearbox on e689/690 vcy was mercedes’ own design, a 12 speed, six postions with a splitter on each.they were crap.the last 1628 that joint had new before e689 was d38 lwn, that had the 16 speed zf,they were bombproof.as i remember every 12 speed gave trouble, the 16 speed zf was heavy but very reliable in service.
regards andrew.

Hi Andrew hows things ? I have got too stick up for the 12 splitter i thought it was a good box. I used it the first day I started at Joints and a few days when I was loading scrap at Shephards of Ardwick Manchester . I wished I had it instead of the Daf I was using . That too had a 12 speed splitter that to was nice too use. I know the merc was under powered but in the yard it was great . Good visabilty on both the Daf and Merc. But the Daf you had to thrash it in there while the Merc went in there with hardly any revs . And there was a midium sleeper to have a kip in . I used to tip at Blackburn then off to Ardwick. I had a key to go in there so I was first on the weighbridge . Any take care . Tony

This was the end. A sorry day for a lot friends . Tony

hi keith,
geoff hewson (rip) drove for joint for a fair few years, then around 1986/7?he bought an a reg. f12 and went subbing to joint.the only subbie i recall with an f10 was tony williams from severn sisters-ish area  .
regards andrew.

I saw an ex Joints out working on friday. Certainly had their colour scheme with the green & red stripes on white. It was up in the Ystadgynlais area of the Swansea valley at about 2.30 heading north. The vehicle was the VW Transporter van. Sorry for teasing.
On another subject was that Tony Williams who later ran a couple of new MAN F2000’s. Think he also had some FL’s as well. Think he retired from haulage when he won lottery and bought a pub. Ho hum

Here’s the truck magazine test on the Merc 1628 with a medium cab . Tony

Sorry I didn’t send the last part of the test here it is ! Tony

Hi all an old Seddon picture from one of Andrews Joint pictures . Tony

hi broadslide,
our mate ec14 tells me that he sees this same van regularly.the owner is a plumber i think  it could well be the same tony williams.i can’t recall him winning the lottery  i remember him having a nasty accident in one of his fl’s,tipping in a field near pylons, you can guess the rest,he was found in the field having been blown right out of the cab,un-injured but a bit shacken
regards andrew.
