hi all,

I’ll bet that E14 sounded well going on that run Andrew. There would be some “craic” in that lay-by I’ll bet Was it rough coil on t’trailer having no sheet or had the driver looked at weather forecast.
Without going back over the thread when did Joints start,I do remember them in the 70s I’m sure.Great thread is this.

hi chris,
thank you for your comments.yes the e14 did go well, those 320’s were one of ■■■■■■■■ finest motors in my opinion.the two open (unsheeted) coils in the photo were to be tipped at shotton’s outside coil store.these and several other steel drops, orb works (under the gantry) newport being another, mean’t that the coil was never packed by b.s.c.and was left exposed to the elements.bizarrly,b.s.c. dictated that unsheeted coil had to be chained sheeted coil in the well never was,a classic case of out of sight out of mind.below is joint’s only sleeper cab 401,tipping at the outside coil storage facility at shotton
.joint’s started with a horse and cart around 80+years ago,called jones motors,until the 60’s.
Thanks for the info Andrew. I’ve not been in Shotton since 1978,by-products plant when on tankers,it was a long hike to that bloody weighbridge, even longer if you were a bit over.
I understand that coil goes by rail from your end to Shotton for coating and then back down again? I well remember the queues of wagons at the weighbridge, nearly as many as Llanwern.(where the shunter had priority - Edwards of Lydbrook was one company with shunters in there).
Not bothered now,the queue can be back to either Cardiff,Swindon or Monmouth for me.

hi all,
dave and chris thanks for your comments.my old a series was a 14 litre 250 ■■■■■■■ and a 9509a fuller,a cracking combination .it was very very noisey, but it went well, though she was a tad thirsty, even with my timber mock load of coil, nowhere near as good on fuel as the cat.in my pete.seen here in glencoe in the western highland’s on the 1999 west coast run

hi dennis,
thanks mate.that load that day was for the abbey, though we also loaded scrap out of shotton for llanwern.joint moved alot of scrap over the years, sheperd’s in rochdale and manchester.cooper’s in smethwick, swindon and canning town were all regular jobs backloading to wales.as you correctly mentioned, joint’s shotton shunter (jeff bennet) had dropped a few trailers for him too load and leave for the changeover lads and nightmen.
regards andrew.
This is a shot of a Bewick trailer standing in the depot we once had at Hockliffe north of Dunstable on the A5.It is loaded with Dexion racking from their factory in Dunstable.Notice the nice clean, straight, lines of the Crane Fruehauf 40footer!!! Cheers Dennis,
