Isn’t controlling your own borders the role of a national govt?

I thought so too.
So why are the UK Gov paying the French as you pointed out?

Because the point of exit is a French border.
It’s been about 700 years since we owned parts of that region.

It seems an odd moral position to take though: France is somehow a better neighbour for taking British money to police its own borders and allowing men women and kids to risk their lives in a rubber dinghy.

How very fraternal that is.

The French are taking UK money, yes. Why?
Isn`t it to prevent people entering the UK? i.e. doing UK border control work.

I don`t think that France is a country that normally tries to stop people leaving it, such as North Korea.

Do they try to stop migrants using unsuitable craft etc? Yes they do, but with greedy and professional smugglers about, it aint easy. If it was an easy task wouldnt the UK just send out a couple of boats and sweep them all up before they land?
Slag off the French all you like but can our own Royal Navy not stop slow, overloaded, rubber boats from “invading us”?

How fraternal is that? We decided not to join that brotherhood years ago. Our choice.

Can the RN not stop them?

Undoubtedly they can, but don’t.

And rightly so once they enter British waters. Often after being escorted by French vessels…

Monkey241:
So, I wonder why do the RN not stop them, but you think the French should?

We covered this.
Read it again.

How many countries have patrols to stop people leaving?
Many try to stop immigrants, but very few try to stop emmigrants.

Should the French really try to stop foreigners from leaving their country? Detain them illegally?
The French trying to stop those in boats is at the behest of the UK Gov.

It is plain that the UK cannot police the Channel itself.
And that is not insulting the sailors of the RN, nor any UK institution. It is a statement of fact.

Try leaving UK to emigrate to Canada…or even France…then tell me that there is no legal constraint.

Then of course we have the illegal trafficking aspect and the risk to life.
Morally and legally the French are obliged to act on both.

The UK authorities will not stop anyone from going to Canada or France.

The Canadians and French have rules on who may enter their countries. The carrier will usually check that a traveler is free to enter the destination country to avoid fines.
If you cannot leave it is the destination country and carrier preventing you.

Under what laws should the French detain these migrants?
UK immigration law??

They won’t stop anyone?
Try leaving without a passport

Are you suggesting that the French DON’T detain ANYONE leaving France to make the crossing?

The stats suggest you’re wrong

“They” will stop you. “They” being the carriers. Because the receiving country won`t accept you.

Illegal entry into france might be a good start, no documentation? next time a Gendarme pulls you over refuse to show any documentation and see what his response is.

They also including checks by UK border authorities.

True enough they do stop people.
Did I ever say otherwise? If I did I was wrong.

Perhaps you were deliberately disingenuous with the ‘they’ definition then?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
I have frequently left the UK with no check by UK Border Force nor anyone else employed by the Gov.
Not without a check from the carrier though.

So, you’re suggesting that there are indeed controls in place restricting your ability to leave your host country?

Do you want the French to tell us how to mange our borders?
Why are you telling them how to mange theirs?

I’m not telling them how to ‘mange’ anything.

International law and agreements lay down those constraints [emoji6]

What? Where did I tell the French how to manage their borders? You asked under what law illegal migrants could be detained I gave a suggestion, two offences which in many countries around the world would lead to you being detained you really need to read what people write
