Jobs you want to do and jobs you dont

tricky title i know,

is there a firm you have always wanted to work for but for one reason or another cant

is there a firm you never wanted to work for but have ended up there and on your first day thought " how the hell did this happen "

there are 2 firms that ive always wanted to work for and the first one is stobarts…

now ive never gave stobarts another thought till i worked there on the agency, i found it a brilliant job just what ive always wanted, good work all one hitters and full loads, one end of the country to the other, and drivers and managers that couldnt do enough to help you. the tackle is all good stuff as well. i used to get coach load of people waving at me while i was driving down the motorway and had to slow down for people to take pictures. all good stuff.
what puts me off is the wages, 5 nights out and tesco’s in fact most of all tesco and 5 nights out.

2nd firm is maritime.

before i had my license i used to live in southampton and work in ap dry dock in southampton docks. maritime used to have a yard opposite the dry dock and i always used to see them in and out of the docks and at this time they had scania 113 320bhp 6x2 nothing flashy like they do now. being a truckaholic i always drove through the docks as slow as possible to take in all the trucks. i always saw maritime and thought one day im going to work there.

dunno really when i was a kid i always wanted to work for myself o/d haha dont think that will happen

and i always said i wouldnt work for stobarts but i did  oh well never mind it was alot better than i thought :open_mouth:

easy short answer here
always wanted to own my own truck, would really love to buy one and work for myself but
2nd part of answer with current climate around transport and finances
wouldn’t want to own my own truck :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

I’ve always wanted to get into the heavy/oversize side of trucking, never had anything bigger than 15m x 3m on the trailer though unfortunately, would have to sell the truck and work for somebody else then I guess.
I really can’t think of any side of the haulage industry that I would hate to be a part of, only sewage might be a problem

Always tryed to get Jobs with the highest possible Pay,not looking how hard the Work was.

Unless there are certain perks to the job.

howabout being the personnel chaufer earning £1k a week for a millionares ■■■■■■ daughter?

It’s never bothered me ho I have worked for or what I have been carrying.

The only criterea for who I would WANT to work for, is that they have office staff that understand what they are doing and the hold up’s that can be faced by drivers. It would be even better, if the company actually appreciates when you stick your neck out a bit too.

The only thing I really dont like, and I’m not a lazy person on the whole, is handball. Obviously most jobs require some manual handling, but one job I was on dealt with sheet roofing products and shaped flashings. Most sites didnt have a FT available and although it was delivering to the companies own teams of fitters, with no real time constraints, it was bloody hard work emptying a fully loaded truck.

I dont care what I do to be honest, have a C+E licence and I’ll do what it takes to get the experience, provided what Im asked to do is safe and doesnt take the pee… :sunglasses:

Always wanted to be on the F1 teams, pref Williams or McLarens, or to do that one big middle east run, just to say I had done it, never quite got to do either, though I did get to do some Euro work…

Would never go back to MRS, my time at Sheerness was not enjoyable…

First place would be with transam (though any touring company like est etc would do)

just for the adventure and seeing places not many people get to see or travel to or even drive to.

other than that id ont mind where i work tbh, if i dont like the place though i wont go back if its agency

worst job i had was my first class 2 job, the boss was a complete {zb} the office staff basically dictated how long you were out even if the run wasnt possible in one hit which alot of the time it wasnt. there was cash handling aswell and they always found a way to make it like my money was short and after 12/13 hours out and being up at work at half 5 in the morning your just not int he mood to argue, he even came backt ome once 6 weeks after a run and said my money was short and i was due him that, but worst of all is being accused of being a junkie by him, dunno why i never swung for him tbh.

but if you get offered a job but a drinks distributor in kirkcaldy starts in A ends in son

A…sons drinks then give it a wide berth.

An underwear fitter in la senza! always wanted to do that:)

Like a few on here i would like to work for transam/est/fieldings but due to mrs/kids not able to :frowning:.

The firm i worked for when i passed my class 2 were [zb] they used to expect you to do 16 - 20 drops on the pallet net work stuff but in order to even complete the first drop the drive was 50/60 miles and they used to load you so slowly you wouldnt leave the yard until 9/10am and then they expected you back at 5/6pm for the trunk

The last firm i worked for werent a bad firm as per say they used to leave me alone when i was out and would only phone up if they needed me to divert from what i was doing…they were useless when things went wrong as i found out the hard way!

i’ve applied to both stobarts and reed boardal on several occassion, never even had a reply. ultimately i’d like to get on european work or heavy machinery but being realistic i’ve only got 18 month class 1 and 3 1/2 total hgv experience so i’m still building the experience i need to sell myself in tricky economic conditions.

I wanted to complete my driving career with a few years on containers, but it just never happened. I’ve done just about every other sort of work, but never containers  I tried to get on with Maritime a couple of years ago but that never came to anything :unamused:

If you do 5 nights out, you wouldn’t be on Tescos all week, in fact last time I was tramping didn’t go near a tesco trailer all week…and why do people assume the money is bad at Stobarts? Ok, its not the best I have ever earned, but it sure aint the worst. The hourly rate is about average at the moment I would say, but there are a few add ons that make up a decent wage…and a tramper would be taking home £500-£550 per week easily.

Would love to go back on car transporters one day…but nowhere near as good (or lucrative) as it used to be.

As for jobs I would never do again…CONTAINERS!..and especially freightliner containers. Sat for hours next to that train waiting for the jumped-up pr*cks in the cranes to get their fingers outta their asses…wonder how many owner drivers they have forced out of business■■?

When i was a kid i always wanted to work for a local company, S J Beckwith, that my dad drove for. I was always going out with him when he was there, and i remember the boss, Roy, saying when i was grown up i can work for him. He always gave me some money for ‘working’ when i went out with my dad as well. Shame he went bankrupt a few years back. They did European work as well as national.

We found loads of old photos of me in their trucks afew weeks back, i’ll get round to posting them up one day.

Maritime was another one i wanted to work for just before i passed my tests, i was forever seeing them on the A12, but after reading some of the stories on here i’m not so sure now.

Same with Bartrums.

Right now though i’m not fussy at all, i’ll do anything just to get my foot in the door

yes you are right actually, ok its the 5 nights out plus the tesco work. i wouldnt mind rdc shunts but tesco direct and stores … forget it.

but then again if i was looking for a job i would apply and see for myself.

I dont think anyone likes the Tesco store jobs, I have never met anyone anyway…but like I say, unless your working out of Goole or Middlewich, you don’t do them all the time. This week again havent been near Tesco’s all week…which is fine by me

I’d agree with that. Very rarely do i go near a Tesco now. Only did store deliveries around Christmas time when it’s busy.

JD, the job is a 5 day week so you only have 4 nights out. You can work a 6th shift if you want and if the work is there, but you can only do it once a fortnight. Personally i don’t bother, 5 days a week is plenty for me.

i used to have my “perfect” job, until the company (profitable)was bought out by asset strippers and sunk.
i got into it,by hounding them till they got sick,i had no previous experience expect some agency work at weekends, and they eventually gave me a job.i had to travel from newcastle to manchester and back every week, but they soon moved me to immingham and allowed me to park at hartlepool once i had proven myself.the management were great, the job a doddle and very enjoyable, and a great set of lads.we had depots all over the country in which you could stop in overnight if required, with the obligatory “crew bus” at your disposal.ho hum.how times change.
i went to work for a couple of firms after i was made redundant and they just werent my cup of tea,the first didnt have enough work, the second was just awful, the people, the trucks, the work.my health was beggining to suffer,so when my previous employers rang me up to say they were starting off under a new company, and would i like a job,i nearly took their hand off.been back ever since, and its a good job,the management are good, the lads too,and the tackle isnt bad either.the only drawback for me is,(and it is a big drawback),is i only ever do scotland.i prefer to do the whole country and have some variation.

well you have both cleared that up for me. lets wait till the recession is over and everybody starts advertising again.
