Jersey info required

Might have a trip to Jersey coming up, Probably be St Helier as it’s a promotional event.
I’ve never been there before, So any info such as restrictions on the size of truck allowed and ferry’s would be gratefully received.

if you are going with a standard artic and a 45 foot trailer, you will not normally be allowed to leave St Helier due to the size restrictions of the island

the island speed limit is IIRC 40mph, across the entire island.

went over there a couple of year’s ago, don’t think i saw any thing bigger than a 53seater coach… and if you stray of the main road’s (about the equiventent of an minor A road) you’ll soon get in to trouble (think minor B road’s).

dunno about ferry’s but
quick search in the net bring this up http://www.aferryfreight.co.uk/

looking on a car ferry site you looking a 450 for a 10 meter long combo…

edit

if that is true, i’d look at getting a couple of 20ft container and short trailer’s, or see if you can get hold of some ex tesco 30-35fters with self tracking back axle…

Just put the info into the aferry web site and I’ve been quoted £4415.68 for a return crossing. Bargin

I did wonder about the vehicle size as many islands seem to have a size limit, due to the size of thier roads.

Can’t really put it on a container as it’s a racing car wanted by one of our sponsors for an event.
Don’t really need an artic, but it’s the only vehicle we have that will carry the car.

i have been to jersey a few times, and every time i have seen a 45 footer, it has always been in and around the dock, or on the industry road just outside the dock

the main roads in St Helier are not too bad, but, i wouldn’t want to take a full size artic any further :open_mouth:

at that price, i’d go via france…

At that price I’d be expecting to go via Mars or get some very special service in my cabin.

Thanks for the info, I think we ought to see if we can find a smaller vehicle to use or get a specialist car transport company to do it. We’ve used a couple of them in the past.

Have been to Jersey a few times before with a 45 footer but could only move before 7am ( came off the boat at 6am) with a police ■■■■■■ too! Delivering show gear & the same back to the dock in the early hours a few days later. This was at least 8 years ago though so could well have changed!
I do remember that before each time we went we recieved P45 stickers to go on the back of the trailers!

Yepp i tokk a wagon n drag around te island. P45 sticker n also as ■■■■■■. As long as you have this you can drive on the island. Was also w a funfair who took there 3 trailers on an artic around so 45 fters n more can drive on it. Just dont deviate off main road as then it gets very tight

Have you looked at or spoken to Condor Ferries, they run freight and passenger services to the channel islands, and have their own transport operation, so they may be able to help with information. They run mainly out of Portsmouth.

Take the smallest vehicle you need then you will be free to move around the Island as you please. The roads are narrow at best and the further away from the docks you go the smaller they get.
30 mph is the speed limit except on the very short dual carriageway near to the docks. Victoria Avenue, where you can go crazy and do 40mph.

The Island is beautiful and a wonderful place for a holiday. Lovely beaches and the people are so friendly. I am biased as I have family there.

Enjoy it.

Not been to Jersey but have done a similar kind of thing in Guernsey. Shipped out of Portsmouth to St. Peter’s Port and then had a Police ■■■■■■ to Saumarez park in an artic with equipment for a special event. Was some kind of Summer party for a French supermarket down there called ‘Le Riche’. Had what looked like a bit of a rough estate at the top end of the island with a burnt out MK2 Cortina on display. Remember they had a lot of 20ft. artics on the boat from Portsmouth but can’t remember seeing them outside of St. Peter’s Port. From what I’ve heard St. Helier’s a bit better and I know that a lot of showmen used to go over there for the “Battle of the Flowers” with artics etc.

I think the only freight vehicle carrying boat is operated by Condor Fferries, its the Commador Clipper.

Had a couple of holidays on Jersey. The island speed limit is 40 mph the roads are very narrow once away from the port.I noticed one training C+E truck over there ,short trailer with single rear axle.Loads of Bentleys and Ferraris but you could cycle faster than they go.

Thanks for all the information, I thought I better call somebody in Jerseys roads and transport. They told me the regs were 11m for an artic and 9.3m for a rigid and a 2.3m width limit.
The ferry cost were £1700 ea way for the artic and £1100 for the rigid. Given my boss a quote for the job as asked and left it with him.
We are getting a quote from somebody we know who has smaller vehicles capable of carrying the car and specialises in this sort of job.

One last shot for you.

There is a Richard Long motor on it but he could be shipping the load unaccompanied. Ask the music festival men as they have some large gigs on Jersey

I’ve just returned from Jersey to the Isle of Man,been on holiday there over Xmas. I noticed loads of Ferryspeed wagons in St.Helier dock area. There are max length artics with double deck trailers but they only seemed to go out of one dock area to another complete with flashing beacon. They have stacks of what look like 20 and 30ft tandem axled trailers, flats, curtainsiders and fridges as well as smaller four-wheelers,all the Ferryspeed vehicles were DAFs,didn’t see any other make.
I took a photo of the dock area and you can just make out a tri-axle DD trailer on the left, turning into the docks - sorry lads I will never ever make a photographer, anyroad it was persisting down with rain so sod the lorries.
In spite of hiring a car and going round the island I didn’t see one artic away from St Helier, and yes, there are some narrow roads away from the capital.

If it`s a racing car can a 4x4 and race trailer not be used, surely would be cheaper on the ferry and easier to drive around the island.

We didn’t have a racecar trailer at the time only trucks, so would have to hire one, and actually even that would have been over the width limit for the Island. To be honest I don’t think we would have needed to go much further than the gates of the docks.
But in the end the Company who wanted the car changed their mind, so it didn’t happen.
