Travelling on A1 northbound around doncaster area, and a new type JCB 4 trac pulling 40ft flat trailer was doing just over 50 MPH
I thought tractors were limited to 25 MPH■■?
not fastracs although the ones round here only seem to be able to do about 35mph
He will have had it chipped
dont quote me but i thought the speed limit for fastracs was or is 40 mph ? and all this on a tractor licence !! not even a tested driver !!
Just to confirm that the vehicle was the new type and was definately doing 50 MPH I had to follow it for 2/3 miles before I could get past

The speed limit for cars is 70mph but you still see them doing a ton; the speed limit for artics is 60mph but you still see them doing 70mph+ down Windy Hill etc… Perhaps you’re unaware that you ain’t the only one to religiously stick to the speed LIMIT.
JCB 4tracs altered tractors as we knew them in the early 90’s when they first came on the market, they were capable of doing over 60mph. Designed as a relief for fustrated car and truck drivers being stuck behind them for miles, this was the specific reason they were made capable of that speed.
If a Tractor can safely travel at such speeds then I pesonaly think it’s a very good thing for all concerned.

get real pat,the trailers they usually pull have no brakes bald tyres no bed(ie no planks) on a dolly not articulated ! and the lads driving them are under 21(most) total death traps.
I fully understand the situation with the rubbish trailers, I was merely pointing out that tractors are not limted to 40mph.
If the breaks were that bad he was probably going down hill LOL
Ok they arent allowed on the motorway but can you imagine getting rid of your truck and getting one of them?.
£15 a year road tax no 6week test, no m.o.t., red diesel, no limit on hours, no tachos and no need for an h.g.v. licence you could employ a spotty 17 year old teenager to drive it for £150 a week
.
Please do not tell any large haulage firms as it might just take off.
The new fastrac is geared to a high speed so it can cruse in top gear at about 1700 rpm at 45 mph so it could go at 63 mph chipped.
Why do you all winge about the fastrac. There arent that many about compared to ordanary tractors and it isnt as though they are taking work of you, and you certianly wouldnt want to do what it has to do in fields, small yards, all that muck and dust. Or to put it another way if the tractors wernt on the road the wheat, potatoes, turkeys etc… wouldnt be in the shops and youd starve!!!

Rubbish, they can only carry there own goods to market or mill they cannot do it for gain…
Where i live in the Ribble Valley one particular four track owner uses his for hire and reward. Not only does he regulary supply local farmers with cattle feed but he also regulary runs down the M65 towards Preston. The local traffic police never seem to bother him.
The fastrac can be spec’d with differnet speed boxes depending on the application it is used for.
Most used in the hire and reward sector are taxed higher, use white diesel, but are not MOT’d or need a hgv licence to drive them. They should be run with trailers with air brakes, and suspension, if not then they shouldn’t exceed 40kph.
They are a good tool for hauling on and off road, but absolutly usless for most field operations.
ive used a fastrac on the motorway several times.
ive even drove from germany to the uk in one on a few occasions.
52 mph flat out.
Over here very few farmers own one,but there are plenty about.Vast majority are used by “utilities” contractors (water/gas pipeline work) on the roads and they haul quarry stone in large commercial dump trailers. These trailers are made over here by firms such as Kane,Redrock,NC,Chieftain and McCauley and very few have airbrakes!!! I have heard that customs+ excise are taking a keen interest in these machines lately because most of them are using red diesel.

I’ve seen him on the M65 recently and I’ve also seen one - possibly the same one on the M6 around Lancaster. In the midlands they get used for transporting veg in crates around Evesham for packing. Their radius extends up as far as Warwick/Leamington. Nornally pulling a 4 wheel flat trailer loaded high with veg crates. Saw it tipped over on a roundabout in Evesham once - Whoops, perhaps a bit too Fastrac there drive!!

It was a very surreal moment when I was overtaken by one of these things on a motorway a few years back. I hadn’t seen one before and the incident broke every preconceived rule there was about tractors
In the fens they are used constantly to pull old and unsafe 40’ lorry trailers with straw and Veg in boxes and crates. The range extends approx 60 miles away from base and the speeds are up to about 48MPH.
And an awful lot of local small Hauliers and Owner Drivers have been forced out of business because of them

without an O licence they are limited to a 15 miles radius from the farm when taking produce off the farm
unfortunately there is no limit for collecting inputs for a farm

it’s when they put 20 foot + livestock trailers behind that causes problems in my line of business I know a haulier about 20 miles from here who is affected badly…
