60 miles without a glance up at your tacho?? I think not!

In the olden days when we had analogue tachographs and I’d only been doing the job for a few days, I took my card out to check it halfway through my shift and discovered I’d put it in the wrong way round. :stuck_out_tongue:

I picked up an old Scania for a friend, put my disc in, set off, red winker on. No trace. Couldn’t work it out so kept going did about 150 miles. Only later did I find it needed a blank disc in the second man bit of the tacho :unamused: Doh

As a rule of thumb, driving without a card inserted can be divided into main 2 categories.

  1. Those matters that do not mask an infringement- generally this would be failing to keep records. These are dealt with by a roadside fine of £300 or if at Court Level 4 fine.
  2. Those matters that are done to try and hide an infringement and these would be possibly viewed as false. These matters are “either way” offences and the Transport Act 1968 S99 (5) potentially carries 2 yrs imprisonment. However, and this is speaking generally, imprisonments for Tacho offences are extremely rare and are usually limited to large scale conspiracies or the fitting of interference devices.

Basically, there has been some good advice on here. Don’t do it.

£300 for the hgv levy ?
£1000 for the card offences and parked up for a 24■■..no biggy if you run like that every week i suppose.
more than likely the ciggies and tobacco he hid in the cab coming over will take the sting out of that.
theres also no chance of the need to have tea and biscuits either…crack on drive.

I did the same on my very first driving shift - except I didn’t discover it until I took the chart out at the end of the shift. Handwritten entry made and “words of advice” from the TM.

Then to my eternal shame I did exactly the same thing on my next shift [emoji20]

Whatever you do, don’t inadvertantly bung in a bank/credit card - apparently all hell lets loose

True.
Overspeeds automatically deduct £80 from your bank account.
Or so I was told.

yep,rdc gospel there,so it must be true.
all it means is that dvsa log it on their database so that when your pulled in for a tug, then they can see youve paid upfront,so you just get waved through without being checked…seems fair to me??

god, if that was true all tangs would be bankrupt by the time they hit Dumfries… :open_mouth:

I thought it just printed bank notes out of the printer?

the trick is not to slow down so that theres never more than 1 overspeed showing in the 1 shift…

I will own up to doing this many moons ago. Took it out for VOSA after being pulled into services on the M6. Luckily I was then told he was too busy dealing with another drive to look at my disk. So after they had checked the truck for defects I was sent on my way… if only he had known or seen my relief. lol

I also did this on my very first day. Luckily I was parked up with another driver who showed me what I’d done wrong. I don’t think it was ever mentioned again.

A bit like putting your card in slot 2, going down the road pressing ‘OK’ every so often as it keeps flashing ‘no card’ and only checking 3hrs later at your first delivery…
