Jaguar for Sale?

Birmingham Mail reports Jaguar-Land-Rover could be for sale.
PSA Group (Peugeot) may be interested. Obvious possible implications for employment in the area.

Nah, more like Flannagan and Allan for c/f …

I see more mergers/take overs on the cards in the next few years, PSA were in talks with FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) just recently but (FCA) have just done a deal with Tesla and reached a deal to pool their fleet together in Europe for the purpose of the latter avoiding emission requirement fines to the tune of $2billion for emission credits. This shows the sort of fines these car manufacturers are facing by 2021.
I expect more of the big car manufacturers merging as the cost of R&D and transitioning to BEV’s will be huge.

Once the Chinese start exporting their cars Chrysler ,G.M. and just about all of the rest will be history. They have some pretty good coaches on our roads as it is.

Yes you’re right, the days of the traditional car manufacturer are numbered. A few have their own BEV skateboard platforms who will survive. VW has said it will make cars for any manufacturer on their skateboard platforms and will put any metalwork on it to their specifications.

When you look at how minimal the new battery chassis skateboard platforms are going to be you can imagine the job losses that the big car manufacturers are facing.

chinese cars wont make serious inroads here-just as their motorbikes havnt. i was in China a few yrs ago and the word among the locals was the chinese cars werent good. the taxis i saw were all VW

Nothing from China lasts for more than a few weeks, even the containers the crap is imported in collapse en route …

I forgot to mention that prior to the PSA group wanting to buy JLR I was reading JLR wanted to buy London-based taxi company Addison Lee for $350million for their reported plan for new mobility.
It doesn’t make good reading for the future of private car ownership. :open_mouth: wintonsworld.com/cool-recep … -mobility/

Didn’t…

The English say that about Japanese motorbikes in the 70s?

Or a self fulfilling prophecy. That will work out well for the domestic economy.More dependence on imported crap and more austerity needed to pay for it.To add to the affordability, let alone the dangers,of a captive market and monopoly of an energy policy based on nuclear fuelled electricity generation.Be careful what you wish for.

As for Jaguar seemingly working against the interests of the private motorist and freedom to drive what they wish as they wish.No point in the above warning in that case because they’ve already made their choice.

The new Queensferry Crossing is made with Chinese steel, I wonder how long it will last. Its a bit like when Russian steel was used to make Italian cars such as Lancias, they rusted away pretty quickly. I think that the idea of most households having a car will be phased out sooner rather than later. The rise of Uber and parking problems maybe people wont see the need to actually have a car.

Surely a world in which car ownership is replaced with renting as and when needed will lead to much more choice about what you drive and when. I think it could make for a much more interesting life. Being restricted to one car that costs a fortune that is parked up 80/90% of the time is a very inefficient way to live, not to mention boring if you like variety

Firstly I don’t think that the freedom to drive what you like where you like is part of their agenda.

As for variety you mean £700 per ‘DAY’ for something with 12 cylinders although lumbered with an auto box limited to 100 miles total use yeah right. Not much use for a continental road trip even if I wanted to pay those type of rental charges.

Or I could rent an XF diesel for the bargain price of around £1200 for 12 days from one of the major hirers which they still probably won’t allow out of the country even if the price includes unlimited mileage. :unamused:

Yep.
The world is evolving away from private ownership of cars. Some may still prefer a small city car to a taxi sometimes, but that’ll likely be a pool car. Longer trips in larger groups or families need bigger vehicles, so easier and cheaper to rent in a vehicle for a week or two than have it depreciating on the driveway for months.
If you like cars and motorsport go play at trackdays. More fun than sitting in a sportscar in a traffic jam on the M25.
And Jaguar aren’t there to serve the interests of the private motorists, they are a business to serve the interests of shareholders through profit making. Yes, C.F., that choice was made long ago.

But a big part of the attraction in motoring is"joy of ownership"
You don’t get that with a rental.

A nice classic car or bike, a proper 4x4 or enduro, a track -day car or bike, yes.
But pride in a euro-box? :open_mouth:
Nah, you`re not convincing me.
